Munising

I simply disagreed with what wery7 posted, that's all. Good comparison to the Bill Nichols area I must say!

You should have read the follow up post to that comment I made.....to wit: the guy that was with me on the run Sunday quit counting at 317.......and that was only between 0830 and 1300 hrs......we didn't see a single sled between 0645 and 0830........and you really expect me to believe the BN trail has many multiples of THAT?

It would be interesting to compare actual numbers rather than just; "...it has to be..."

What he said......I don't mind being disagreed with at all as i'm sure his experience in that area is far greater than mine. But is it possible there is more "there and back" destination riding in the Munising/Wetmore area heading to the East than there is from Houghton heading South to the Mass City area? Are there more sleds in the Marquette, Munising, and Wetmore area hotels being used at "home base" that head east and back than in Houghton/Hancock heading South? I know when I stay in Munising, all of our riding heads East multiple times with maybe one trip South. When i'm in Houghton, all my riding is North, and we may head South once in three days. That is a great stretch heading South though....just not many destination type places to ride to on our agenda in that direction.

Yes for sure. Based purely number of available lodging rooms between Bergland and Calumet vs. the Muni area. Do I know exactly what that number is....no. But you can't tell me there's more rooms in Muni vs. the Houghton region.

Yes for sure.

Oh C'MON.......SERIOUSLY? That was 317 sleds PLUS in 4 hrs and 15 min. sample......."many" multiples would imply at a minimum 3, at least to me.......so you really expect me to believe that there's a 1,000 sleds + PER DAY on that single trail???? Pfffffffffffffffft! ;)

If the clubs/associations/?? that maintain the Bill Nichols trail can improve it they way they have, Munising can do the same. How?...is the question I can't answer for you.

By that argument (including Bergland and Calumet lodging) you would have to include lodging in Marquette to Grand Marais. I think your underestimating the amount of lodging in Munising/Wetmore. There are no ski hills or colleges in the Munising area that draw in additional travelers lIke Houghton. It's pretty much sledders that fill the hotels in winter. And they do get filled, anyone that goes there on a regular basis will attest to that.

Hope to do this in the coming weeks. Just need to figure out the logistics. Saturday - 6am to 6pm - sled count in intersection of 419e and trail 8.
Just want an over all count of how many pass thru that intersection on a busy Saturday. Maybe a little camp fire party...

IMO...to get the best count of a typical Saturday in the UP you have to do it before President's Day weekend. Traffic drops off after that in most places that have snow.

Anyways........improving your setups and operations should be your #1 goal. Who cares how many sleds roll through. The Mass City - Houghton folks sure don't.

I think it is good data to have so that you understand how much traffic you are dealing with. Can also help with planning groomer routes to ensure we are hittin gthe right areas at the right times making us more efficient. So I guess the answer to your question is our club cares how many sleds roll through. Also this company states these counters are in use in the Houghton area. So it seems the club or dnr out that way care too.

IMO You need snow in your area so you can go out grooming and stop worrying so much about bashing all we do in Munising.

This is what we will prob get.

With all due respect, please trailer to somewhere closer to trail 3. The ride from Wetmore west stinks, dozens of driveways and business crossings, not to mention low snow spots near the lake between Munising and Marquette.
Personally, I would drop in Watersmeet or any town due north and head up from there.

Heading up 2-17 with 3 of my dirtbiker buddy's that will be first timers on sleds. Was wanting to go west to big bay and east to white fish point for day trips. Also I want them to experience offtrail riding without trespassing. Been talking this sled trip up. So any feedback would be good. Thanks.

Those are awfully ambitious "day trips" for newbies, mileage wise........and if you're planning off-trail I hope they are young & strong (i.e. good pullers).......good luck and enjoy.......

I agree, those are extremely long trips to do with first timers. I would look for other routes....such as down to Big Spring/Manistique loop, gwinn/marquette loop, or Grand Marais/Seney loop.

off trail - i noticed something interesting the other day. When looking at the weather radar map in motion from www.weather.com I noticed it is showing private property in white. If you look around most lakes in the area you will see they are white. (Private Property) All the rest is national forest around here. (kind of tinted green) This is all fair game.
