well since i guide snowmobiles for 25 years or so now and started out in that area and those trails.....plenty times....and yes....the cars lights do shine it up the same way....the problem is so does the aurora coming down the leyline....the colors are from the aurora and the white and blues come from the cars.....noone ever thinks HEY.....maybe BOTH ARE happening intermittently and randomly....then they all say NAW.....its the car lights....same as the indians thought....YA, thats our ancestors dancing up there....only it ain't.....its the solar wind hitting atoms of different elements creating lights AND that trail is EXACTLY dead on the magnetic leyline on the earth....which HAS BEEN PROVEN TO EXIST 1000 TIMES OVER BUT YET>>>>STILL PEOPLE CANNOT EVEN GET PAST THAT POINT for gods sake....someone also said the lights were first recorded in 1966.....NOT....they were written down as early as freakin' 8000BC or so im afraid to tells yas.....that path was long known to the MENOMINEE INDIANS and was recorded by white men as early as 1790 to 1800's....then afta trains it was recorded MANY TIMES up until today....so in conclusion

I HAVE A SERIOUS TIME BELIEVING ITS CAR LIGHTS

and BOTH probably happen....so LENNY you right too otay....but it certainly is not why the lights happen so often and with length and colors

heres the indians story if you want to read it....interesting

there are no specific references to the "Paulding lights" on that website, at least under the searches I did. I want to read about indians refering to the Paulding lights

Thank you!

Yes, I guess Johnson Lake road might also work as well as the source of the "Paulding light", but it's a tad further north than the "sweet spot", roughly 2 miles beyond the point where the present US45 comes back into alignment with the line-of-sight, and there's probably a bit more forest for the light to penetrate.

It is 3.85 miles from the Paulding light viewpoint to "beautiful downtown" Paulding (Bond Falls road), and 6.6 miles to Johnson Lake road.

While parked at Johnson Lake road, facing to the south as you said, you will indeed be positioned to see the "Paulding Light in reverse", the vehicle lights along the 1/3 mile long "sweet spot".

I didnt spill the beans, this was a way early post

I just trying to keep the suspense here.

What they are saying is they see a light starting in the distance comes closer to them, and gets brighter.

sorry for all the posts but I have started to read the entire thread again and looking at some of the good points made. The light coming in closer is a good point. We see the light on average for 1 min 15 sec, we predict the lights are approx 5-6 miles away. if this as somewhat accurate, we can conclude we observe the light coming towards us for roughly 20% of the overall distance, I believe that is substantial, may be a reasonable assumption at why the light appears to come closer, BECAUSE IT IS!!!! ;)

msrunningbear, I'm back! Believe it or not, I actually had to do work at work today :)

No, I have not been to the light. However, my fiance and I are doing a sort of "honeymoon" in the Keweenaw this summer and I am hoping to make a short side trip to Paulding.

hmmmmm, I wonder why we have NO pictures of these "other" lights. I woner why when people viewing the same light I see they are perplexed and in awe. I think we are refering to the same light. Most of this time you have not accpeted that any of the light was head lights. It has been a more recent development that you are believing head light could be seen from the distance we are talking about. Even if you loose we'll still share the Gen Hoe with you.

I have finally reconstructed the terrain profile¹ of the line of sight from the Paulding Light lookout point due north, a distance of approximately 9 miles. (The vertical elevation is exaggerated.)

Profile.jpg

The diagonal line running from the upper left corner to near the lower right corner of this terrain profile represents the line of sight from the viewpoint. The rightmost point in the profile is approximately at Amber Lake Road/Himanka Hill Road. The other points in the profile are the following:

A. A hill at N046° 21.747' W89° 10.721', a visual obstruction to any terrain below the line of sight.
B. Bond Falls Road.
C. Sleepy Hollow Road.
D. Swanson Road.
E. Johnson Lake Road.
F. A point approximately midway between Johnson Lake Road on the South and Amber Lake Road/Himanka Hill Road on the North. At ≈ 1.18 mi. north of Johnson Lake Road & ≈ 1.32 mi. south of Amber Lake Road/Himanka Hill Road. This section of higher terrain from just south of Johnson Lake Road, at a maximum altitude of ≈ 1440 - 1447 ft. is a visual obstruction to any terrain below the line of sight to the north, to well beyond Bruce Crossing.

H. A section of higher terrain, ≈ 0.5 miles long, maximum elevation ≈ 1425', from ≈ 1.17 mi. north of Sleepy Hollow Road to ≈ 1.80 mi. south of Johnson Lake Road, another visual obstruction to any terrain below the line of sight.

Other unmarked points of the profile are as follows:

1. The sharp "notch" nearest the left end of the profile is Bluff Creek, which also appears at the bottom of the round "notch" that is the second to the left of Bond Falls Road (point "B").
2. The small "notch" at the bottom of the steep drop to the right of Hill "A" is Mateson Creek.
3. The "notch" lying between Bond Falls Road (point "B") and Sleepy Hollow road (point "C") is Roselawn Creek.
4. The deepest "notch" at the right edge of the profile is the East Branch of the Baltimore River.

(¹ This profile from DeLorme Topo USA® 10.0; the original was lost some years ago in a computer catastrophe.)

now that right there is putting some work into the old mystery light.....it does clearly show the points where you could see car lights.

I'm still struggling with the brightness....and how close it seems.....but I guess if someone is at the sweet spot and we're at the viewing area and say we see the bright light and the sweet spot person says its a semi with brights on....well I would have to believe them.....but I'm hoping the conditions are right and the mysterious light shows up that....can't be written off as car lights
