Paulding Light

First time we saw the light, we parked, turned off the lights,(left the minivan running). It was dark out and very quiet. Watched the light for a while,(standing in front of the van) then got the $#*% scared out of us when the electric radiator fan kicked on in the Caravan.:)

Alright, I'll just throw this one out there - In 1888 there was no power grid or transmission lines. Thus no 3 mi line of sight clearing to even see a light(s) ???

Couple things

It's fun to talk about things like this because our imagination runs wild with it and that excites us, and understandably.

I also was interested in this issue so I drove over there one clear evening with my family and we all starred like the rest of the observers. I on the other hand am not one to speculate only. I came there with a set of binoculars and used the stop watch on my watch. I immediately thought it was the vehicles because I saw white light coming towards me and just before they faded out the veered to the right, consistently. I also seen the red which veered to the left shortly after they appeared and than slowly faded.

Next I focused the binoculars and that only confirmed my suspicion.

Next I timmed the light to road noise because the dead end road that you view the lights are not far from the highway and run kinda perpendicular but more so on an angle. I could not hear a car go buy but semi's I could hear so on 4 occasion I spotted the light and about 1 min 45 sec I heard the semi go by. The time varied 4-10 seconds which is reasonably consistent to draw a conclusion. There is no doubt in my mind that the lights are head lights and tail lights.

If you like superstition than it's a headless conductor of a train who lost his head and is looking around with his lantern. Sorry to pop the balloon here guys but none the less it is still cool ( I guess)

As far as the question, how do we explain it because there we no cars in the 1800's ? Easy ! There is no way to verify this light has been in contention since the 1800's, it's all part of the hype. Anyone can just say, we have been seeing this since 1684 but I say if this is the case than there ought to be some reference material confirming this claim. I have looked and it's not out there.

THIS MYTH IS BUSTED PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!

I've seen it. Very cool. It's been studied by many and no one has the solution yet. Car lights are the 'easy' answer for non believers I guess. From what I know, it doesn't have to be any certain weather. I was there with a big group, and we all watched it for a solid 20+ minutes. It started out as a red blinking light. It then turned to a white color, and seemed to approach us. Like a snowmobile coming from where we had just been. But no snowmobile. No noise. Just light. Then it was gone. Very cool. There is also no trick- you don't have to spin three times, flash your lights, etc- like other ghost stories. Just go there and look and you'll see it.

non-believers? I guess you made more of a statement than you "believed"

so if I believe than I have to have no answer and blindly discard all reason. I must admit this is fun if anything. It's all spooky and stuff!!!!

I know I know, I am a lump on a log, the death of a party!!!!

Live right here in town and no one is sitting in their car with their lights on for 20 minutes.. I to thought cars at one point... but when I have been there and it has lasted 20 minutes and it can come so close to close for cars 3.85 miles away....Hmmmm starts ya thinking again. I too have seen it off in the distance and looked through binoculars and I'll give ya that, the fade to the right and left red and white. But the 20 minutes and how close it got on several occasions has changed my mind.

Would be easy to say headlights but I'm not buying it..lol...it comes way to close and stays to long.

So did I un-bust the myth yet????? :)

And dcsnomo so thats what the great light was that came from your cabin...lol.....

I do not live there nor have I seen this light, but it is fun to read what everyone has to say about it. Would it be possible to have some park on the road where everyone says the light is coming from and be on the phone with someone on the road where everyone is saying they see the light and when or if it appears, they could say if there is a car or no car. Just my thought, but still fun to read about.

I have thought the same thing and have seriously considered doing it but you know what, there are still those who will refuse to understand because it is fun to look at things like this, I admit it, I like it also. I probably need to stay out of it so I don't discourage the hype. I'll do it but keep the results to myself, maybe

I'm in...... come on Lenny lets do it. I think that would be great to try. Know people with walkie talkies that have tried it by foot...but not car. Cell service sucks around here but I think we could figure out a way....

I agree, Lenny, I'm not buying it without some credible documentation of such a sighting, circa 1800, not just "old wives' tales".

I'm surprised such a scientific experiment hasn't been conducted and documented. Lenny's study comes as close as any, but a serious scientific study, as you suggest, would need a team effort, communications gear (how's the cell phone coverage there?), and perhaps a unique (green?) laser light source.
<hr size="2" width="75%">In a way, I'd hate to disprove this myth, 'cuz its kinda fun! But as ol' Joe Friday would have said, "we just need the facts, ma'am"! :)

un-busted....lol..:D

come on!!!! you just cannot keep saying un-busted, were offering results from intentional observations, they mean something, to much just to discount and say "un-busted",,,lol

I have one of those million candle power hand held lights. I can for sure determine the source of light with experimentation using phones and the light.

Didn't mean to offend 'skeptics/non-believers'. I've just read a lot of info on it b/c I'm a scientific person myself- I like evidence. The fact remains that scientists have studied this, it's been on Ripley's, etc.... there have been tests done to try and find the source. It remains one of the unsolved mysteries in our country. I'm pretty sure a paid scientist doing a study would have thought of 'car headlights' and that it would be pretty easy to prove that theory. Fact is, it hasn't. They took that into consideration and there was no proof that it came from any roads/cars. If you think everyone who sees it is being duped by headlights, fine by me. We're all entitled to our opinion. I just found the research that was out there and that all states that car lights have been ruled out as the source. I'll try to find the link to the info I found (I did a bunch of searching a few years ago after going to see it while on a snowmobile trip).

I hate to waste the time but would do it. I mean look, we see white and red lights, not green or blue. Cars have white and red lights, this alone is a strong factor. I would hate to be the one responsible for busting the myth 100% because than what?

"Lenny you friggin idiot, we have been having fun with this light for 50 years now and you come along and wreck it all", "rat bastage!!!!!"

Runningbear, you wanna be my assistant in the matter? If not i can bring a bud over there sat night and wrap it up

I would have to say red tail lights are not that bright. They would be hard to see from a distance and threw the brush. The next time I am up that, which won't be until next winter I will make sure to stop there, my wife loves this kind of stuff.

After you guys get to the bottom of this, can we go south to Cumberland, Wi. and find the elusive "Cumberland Beast", who is Bigfoot's cousin. Then we can go to Canada and catch "Ogo Pogo", the marine creature who may be a relative of "Nessie." After we get those two figured out, we can get some R & R in Mexico while searching for "La Chupacabra."
