At the location of the Paulding lights, the Michigan Forest service has put up signs which indicate the best area from which the lights can be seen. So far, no logical conclusions have been reached. The lights have been witnessed as being red, white and green. These lights are not to be confused with the Northern Lights. They are a phenomenon that is unique to Paulding, Michigan.

This was taken from the website link above and talks about green lights? We only saw red and white the night we went and some high school kids were going to walk down the powerlines to "check it out", we never heard from them again............because we left about 5 mins later :)

Looking forward to your report Lenny & the Bears =) I'm all for scientific proof one way or the other, have at it. But I just think if it was really car lights, someone would have been able to debunk this a LONG time ago. Let me know what you guys find...
And Lenny... I'm a bud-ette.

With the hill in between would that effect of moisture in the air(diffusion I think) bending light cause the lights to appear longer in time and nearer? Like at sunset.
Just thinnen.

come on, I work. I was home for lunch and now finished for the day so I am back at it ready to go. I'll have to gather up all my sensitive equipment and the like and calibrate them to maximum sensitivity for this important scientific experiment.

I will "get er done" before the end of the weekend, probably sat night. maybe Fri night, I don't know which.

Nash- we need your brain for this. Give me some tips for accuracy on how to handle this so after I bust the myth people don't accuse me of bogus data.

Here is what I have in mind as I think now. I'm gonna bring the GPS and mark the location of viewing the light. I have been there before and familiar with the road. I'll back track using the GPS cookie crumb feature. This will allow me to see my exact position of viewing and follow my path backtracking up the highway toward Paulding. I'll probably also mark a way-point where I believe I timed the semi's running somewhat parallel to the campground road. .

I'll take the 1,000,000 candle power hand held and flash at my assistant I (he he runningbear) until they "see the light" Amen! I'll mark my way-point just for my own reference point (coordinates don't lie) . After I locate my reference point where the light is viewed, I'll drive to this location in both direction and confirm with my assistant ;) to BUST THE MYTH. I'll share all pertinent info with those interested.

Nash, what else?

Honestly, I don't think anyone want's this debunked. Ropley's thrives on this stuf. It's a tourists attraction, we don't want that to go away now do we runningbear? lol

It looks to me as though you have all your ducks in a row. Just too bad you don't have a high intensity green laser in addition to your 1,000,000 candle power hand held, or maybe a variety of uniquely colored lenses for that.

This is sure to be a fascinating experiment, I wish I could be there!

Is that $125,000.00 "from unsolved mystery....Hmmm maybe Ripley’s" still available? You folks can split that. It'll make a nice retirement fund! :)

We did the same thing last summer....I'm tellin' ya' that US-45 at Johnson Lake road north of Paulding is where the headlights come from.

Make sure you both have a light....you will be able to see each others lights.

I been there alot of times at ya I thought it could be car lights in the distance. I have been there twice where the light came real close and bright not like other times I been there. I have ruled out car lights. And I was sober.

I have been there twice where the light came real close and bright …

I've heard/seen that "the light came real close and bright" before, but I don't know what that means.

When looking to the north along the power line and "old US45" into that valley (as shown in this picture from the Backwoods Wisconsin web site):

paulding2.jpg

… does the light appear to be suspended above the "old US45" roadway, to the left (west) of the power line? Below the tops of the trees/power lines?

And about those "sightings in the 1800's":
I just reviewed the Backwoods Wisconsin web site, (it has been a few years since I'd seen it), and found this:

Although some local people claim to have seen the strange lights over a long period of time, the first reported sighting was in 1966.
So much for the sightings in the 1800s! :p

This will be interesting. Lenny we all will expect a full report on our desks Mon AM. :)

You may need to work out a code with your light. Walkie talkie or other communication devices may get static or disrupted..

I just trying to keep the suspense here.

What they are saying is they see a light starting in the distance comes closer to them, and gets brighter.

I'm still going to do it myself. Actually I'm gonna email Mr Freeze and see if he want's to help out. He's a pacticular kinda guy, would probably enjoy it very much. I'll keep you guys posted, this is gonna be fun.

Hey runningbear, you wanna make a little wager on the results? Like lunch or something, how about trade an offtrail adventure?

Ok...do you see the black spots on the road at the top of that hill....the light was not any higher than the trees...big like a train headlight...came towards us like a train getting brighter and brighter...it then backed up got dimmer and dimmer then back towards us brighter and brighter and a lot closer than you think(too close for car lights...just sayin). Oh and almost center of the road or to the right of the road but in between the road and the wires. Then just to the left of the road still below the trees or close to the top of them that same bright light and it stayed for 20 minutes. Even been there and had a car come down old 45 below the light

I honestly believe a gps will be very useful because the distance is fairly great. The reason you cannot distinguish 2 lights from 1 is because they are far far away, how far I don't know but I would say at least a miles, Once I determine the location I can get the distance as the crow flies. I would like to go in the day time also and possibly walk it.

Runningbears, is this private property or could I walk it legally?

Nash, I think you should consider coming out here and be part of the busted myth. I'll set you up for free at my "old town hall", you can borrow "old blue" truck while your here, whatch ya say ol pale!
