Can anyone give me first hand knowledge on how difficult it is going to be crossing the border with a DUI? I openly admit that I got one 13 years ago. I am not even sure if it is still on my record (plea bargain). I would hate to go that distance and be left at the border or turned away at the airport. This is obviously a deciding factor for me.

I say we take a trip over to Sault St. Marie and cross the border to find out all the details. Maybe a trip to Wawa or just for the **** of it?

To enter Canada you do not need a passport. To return You DO. (crazy rule to pass blame on the US). Anyways, an Enhanced Drivers license or passport is required to return to US. This takes some time and effort. You can get passport pics taken at Rite-Aid, Walgreens, Meijer store photo area, Maybe Walmart. Passport apps at most Post offices.

Would crossing the border in Ontario be the same as crossing the border in BC? Would there be any differences besides the customs agent?

I'm sure they are like any other government agancy. One dude could suck one could be sweet as pie. Best not to mess with the system and just plan for the "worst" crossing guard, put all our ducks in a row and do a check with sites like this: http://www.cic.gc.ca/ENGLISH/visit/conviction.asp.

I followed the links techsledder posted (thank you) and don't believe I will have a problem. Since the offense was so long ago it appears I will be "deemed rehabilitated." The site does suggest qualifying this with an embassy prior to traveling to Canada. I attemtped to call the embassy in Detroit but their message states that they will only handle these matters in writing. I sent them an e-mail and received confirmation back from them that it has been received. We will see what they have to say.

If anyone has first hand experience with this type of thing please let me know. Taking a trip over the border as a test sounds like a good idea. Reason for a road trip on the bike this summer. Wayne, you in?
