I have no problem either paying at pump or going inside before pumping.

I'm actually surprised more businesses don't do think for sledders. I'd rather have businesses do this than raise the prices to cover losses.

Kipp, what if you went as far as utilizing a pump attendant during busy times? Use the Apple credit card reader so the attendant does not have to run inside all the time and print out a receipt for the customer. Might even get some cross sales opportunities if using an aggressive sales person type as attendant.

Sorry for your loss.

Turning a negative into a positive here. Maybe the come inside and leave your helmet before you can gas up thing might increase sales. I know every time I take my helmet off at Kip's I end up spending money. LOL
X4 Me too!

Now he's gotta pay somebody to sit outside for $10/hour making .10 cents/gallon?????

I agree with the "give me your helmet first" idea, or just flat out set up "pay inside first". Or credit card only..?

Just use an existing employee, no additional wages. Kip is losing more than $0.10 profit per gallon, he is losing the entire gas cost. So 8 sleds drive off x $30 per fill up ea. = $240 loss. I have stopped at several places throughout the years that use an attendant for the busy season for snowmobile filler ups.

Credit card only pay at the pump would solve all problems. Pumps are probably pretty pricey but just a thought.

Actually its double the amount for a total of $480. Not only did he lose the amount of the sale, Kip still has to pay for the fuel as well. Been down this road many times. Being in the construction field I have learned this lesson.

Very sorry to hear about ride offs Kip. Please think about pay at pump by CC & up charge to cover your costs. The good peeps still will come in the store to buy stuff you really don't have to get them to come in just for gas payment. I like your non corn gas & always fill up at your shop. Pay at pump does solve the problem ...think about it seems worth it to me.

Sorry to hear this my friend, sledders are getting more and more inconsiderate, I have noticed it alot more this year than other years, or maybe I'm just getting old. I think anything you have to do to protect your business is fine by the majority of us who appreciate what you do for us.

X2.
Thanks for your attention and conversation Thursday. Sucks that this happened, but I doubt the helmet/CC thing would be a problem. Most people come in groups so all that needs to happen is first person comes in while the others fill up and as long as people keep paying as they pump it shouldn't be a problem

Unfortunately we just bought new pumps. Our gas business is really seasonal so spending 40,000 extra dollars for pay at pump credit cards just didn't appeal to me. If it were more reasonable I probably would of went that route but I appreciate the ideas and support. You're welcome Gary, thanks for stopping in.

The mindset of a thief.....
We had an overhead gas tank at work. When we noticed someone was stealing gas, we filled the tank with diesel instead. That afternoon as half a dozen employee's cars stalled out while pulling out of the lot, we handed them their pink slips. When asked why they would be stupid enough to risk losing their jobs for a few gallons of gas, they almost all replied, "We're not the stupid ones for allowing it to happen."
There's no honor among thieves.

Sorry to hear this. I know this won't fix it, but this is a everyday thing down here and guess who is buying your gas. The same losers we have.

yur right, the sport is changing. A lot more doom and gloom negative nellies out there these days.

On a positive note, our club has had a recent surge in young members who get involvesd in the clubs activities.

The problem with credit card pumps is that there are always fees that will nick away at he measly 10 cents a gallon profit. Paying a guy $10 bucks an hour to stand by the pump is not a good way to cash flow either. Kip's idea is the best. It is just a bad sign of the times when you pay big bucks for a sled and a trailer and rooms and food and travel and then do something like this. I don't get it. Snowmobiling costs money. It is as simple as that. Ripping people off along the way is not acceptable. But you can' fix stupid.
