3 months? It just went into affect state wide (WI anyway) on Monday.

I've already heard all the ways they are going to try to get around it......Kinda funny.

I was refering to michigan, their ban started in may!!

I no longer smoke..but I do believe, IMO, the ban to be wrong.

There is an American Legion in the UP that is not following the ban, they have gotten fines and refuse to go smoke free, they are not paying the fines and they are still smoking. There is no way to enforce the ban. I bet there will be another law about smoking outside of the bar after the butts get about knee deep or so, especially in the city areas where you could toss your butt on the street. But that would create a new job for someone working for the city, going around sweeping up butts.

In other states where the ban went into effect awhile ago, many of the places that were worried, have recovered nicely and apparently (from what I have gleaned from the stories in out of area newsprint)....they have actually increased patronage...though it is unclear whether this is the result of the ban or a recovering economy.

Grumpy old guys who aren't giving up the habit huh? LOL.

As far as butts outside, from what I have seen around here, smokers are to damn lazy to put their butts where they belong, it is just easier to throw them where ever they want. When our plant was at 25 people or so, I use to love sending one of the smokers out to pick up all the butts outside the breakroom door all over the ground. They would bitch and bitch, I just laughed and told them if they would put the butts where they belong, you wouldn't have to pick them up! But, that would have required them to walk 3 feet out of their way. LOL.

in MN if you get busted so many times you will not get your liquor lic renewed.and not all drinking establishments are doing as good or better.my bud lost over 50%the 1st yr and is now about 25% less than before the ban.but it is a drinking mans Bar right outside the gate of a big manufacturing corp on the border so he is thinking now his numbers may get closer to the old norm

Hey, I was repeating the idea, not making a statement....dats what dah press was say'n....

In my travels, it is clear as a bell that the Midwest is hurting the most primarily the industrial sectors which were loosing jobs long before the rest of the country began to feel the pain. I don't know about Minnie....don't get up dat way at all.

People are get'n past dah ban, down my way, as every place I go, the drinking trough's are full anytime after 4pm on every day of the week.

ohh the media...yep all is well....hahaha....smoking issue here is over!!!NO SMOKING IN DOORS...

I went to a smoke shop with a friend few weeks back and WOW they had a smoking room and the owner even said!!!" I dont know what goes on in a closed room"...if you bring in a flask or a beer or two he wont care!!!!I find it wrong you can smoke in a smoke shop but not a bar....seems that someone had to put there hard earned money up to open a bar\smokes shop and then have regulations like that is unfair to one!!

My bad, MI (3 months) and WI (3 days) both have "new" bans.

As for the not complying, from what I've heard from those supposedly in the know, the smoking ban violations cannot affect a WI liquor license. And, there has to be a specific complaint for an officer to stop and check, and that person that complained must appear and testify in court if they accused so desires to take it that far.

Personally, I like the ban as a non-smoker.

Only in a Casino here

Here in Iowa the only business blessed with inside smokin' are the casinos. Pretty sure there wasn't any lobby money slid under the table on this one???!!! Yeah, RIGHT!! As a bar owner, it is kinda nice not havin' yellow sticky goo all over the inside of my building, but what personal freedoms are next on the hit list?? Kinda scary!

A "recovering economy" here (see chart).
A "recovering economy" by definition is one where GDP is growing over consecutive quarters

Note, this is not a "recovered" economy, which will take years, since we have lost over 3 million jobs.

Doesn't mean the mess is cleared up, or that we won't slip into a double dip recession.

No lobby money needed. Casinos are on tribal land, "sovereign nations". As such, the tribes pretty much have to agree to the laws they will accept and adopt into their own tribal governments. That's just the way the courts have ruled and a law like a smoking ban probably isn't one worth fighting to impose on them and certainly wouldn't have much chance of winning in the courts.

It is my understanding, The American Legion in Baraga that is protesting the ban, is on tribal land & there is still an issue with the Statewide ban. They are continuing to fight it as they contest that "private property" cannot be ruled by the state.-Mezz
