Smoking Ban?? Update??

Not sure about WI or MI but here in IL where the ban has been in place for over 2.5 years I think our bars have done just fine (please correct me if I'm wrong). There was all sorts of fear and anger from the bar owners, saying how they'd probably have to close their doors, they were on the news virtually every night about it. But bars everywhere are still open and pretty full at that (again, where I've gone). When smokers need a puff, they step outside into the shelters the bars put up for them. Being a non-smoker myself, I LOVE going out for a drink and not having to worry about my clothes and hair REAKING of smoke.

I agree most will all get over it.

In general I have only gone to bars on vacation (up north) or on bowling night.
25 years in this neighborhood I've never been in a bar around my house, the smoking ban starts I started visiting the neighborhood bars, And now we go out pretty regular.

You could say it's cause my kids are now grown and I can do what I want, but if they still allowed smoking I know I wouldn't go in them.

Funny how that works, isn't it? Here in Door County, bars that went non smoking earlier this year had an increase in business, driven by non smokers.

I noticed at my local dive the die hard smokers are no longer belly up at the bar. I figure they are staying home or have found another place where they can smoke.

I don't think the sky has fallen, yet...for sure, and it would not surprise me that the casinos will ultimately move away on their own, from allowing smoking...perhaps limit to one area, and then axe it completely...but that's just my guess.

As for as the economy recovering, the point was not that it has, but that with the unemployment rate falling and a "purported" beginning...of a recover, this might, or would account for the "increase" in bar patronage....and not necessarily that smokers were or are still boycotting bars...and punishing the bar owners.

I don't frequent these places much unless I have to finding something to eat, but many times I have walked out of places that were smoke filled because I knew that by the time I got my food, I would have a headache. That's another reason to have all 4 stroke sleds.

The Mosquito Inn is still down about 35 to 40 percent compared to last year at this time. We have talked to several other bar owners and bartenders in the area and it is about the same in South Range, Houghton, Hancock, Greenland and Mass City. Right now people are staying home or at their camps instead of the bars. We will have to see when it get cold again what will happen.

3 months? It just went into affect state wide (WI anyway) on Monday.

I've already heard all the ways they are going to try to get around it......Kinda funny.

What incredible timing! Take way the right on a private owner to allow adults to use a legal product in a legal manner on the private property...all done on INDEPENDENCE DAY!

Sometimes this all reminds me of the scene in Austin Powers when he wakes up and doesn't know which side won the Cold War!

There is an American Legion in the UP that is not following the ban, they have gotten fines and refuse to go smoke free, they are not paying the fines and they are still smoking. There is no way to enforce the ban. I bet there will be another law about smoking outside of the bar after the butts get about knee deep or so, especially in the city areas where you could toss your butt on the street. But that would create a new job for someone working for the city, going around sweeping up butts.

Aren't they the veterans that fought for freedom? Can't blame them for now wanting to follow this law.

thats what I thought...recovery?were?

Don't worry, the Government is going to fix the economy. Just pass this $1.0 trillion "stimulus" so that unemployment will stay under 8.0%. Oh wait a minute...you mean govt doesn't have all the answers? The nanny state can't save us?

What is the exact percentage of people that smoke? Is it around 20%?? I don't know but whatever it is it should have been left up to the bar and business owners. If they think they would attract more customers with a non-smoking environment then go for it. I know around here if there were 4 non-smoking bars and 1 smoking bar the smoking bar would always be full and the other 4 would be fighting for the scraps. However that will never be an option now. It is so nice to have a government expanding daily to intrude on everyday life. I have heard that there is now a movement to rid the nation of bacon. Bacon causes hardening of the arteries, strokes, heart attacks, gout and zits. It is even more hazardous than cigarette smoking. Also a growing number of people are complaining of their clothes smelling like bacon. Truly a catastrophic situation that requires immediate government action.

They can take my cigarettes, BUT THEY WILL NEVER TAKE MY BACON!

Or maybe they'll at least start being a little more concerned with people getting plowed in the bars and then driving home. At least they won't smell as bad now!
