We need the cold way more than snow. So much standing water and mud out there. I wouldnt even consider riding if we got 10 inches right now.

Rain Rain and more Rain, looking at the 10 day no snow in sight and for the most part above freezing for daytime highs for all but about 3 days! The season that got off to a great start is looking to be maybe all the riding in S.E Wi this year. Looking like after this rain and warm coming you are going that have get to at least HWY 8 north to ride. Hope Late Feb and Early march bring some cold and snow!

Yeah pretty terrible here this year... I had 200miles in Walworth county before Christmas. The other 1,300 miles have been north or west. Was hoping for a better year than this. I guess maybe we still have a chance end of February/ Early March but those long sunny days usually do a lot of damage unless it's very cold. :( Starting to lose hope for us down here.

Just gonna go out a whim here and say we are probably done for the year. Of course it is only FEB 14th and I have seen plenty of good riding down here in late Feb/ early March. But with temps in the mid to upper 50s this weekend and still warm through the middle of next week I am going to guess all the frost is going to be out of the ground. Things will need to dramatically change by the end of the month for us to have a shot at riding down here again. Go figure.

I don't think you would be going out on a whim, how about a high degree of confidence! It's my fault as I bought a home in Fontana and closed earlier this month, first time I have been able to sled from my garage since I was a teenager, go figure! Two really lousy years in a row, not only for southern Wisconsin, but most of the state. My favorite areas are west and north of Madison, no go. Tired of going to the UP and northern Wisconsin to ride year after year.

I agree, some of the wet areas are not going to freeze again this year. I would be shocked if there was anyway to open them if it did snow again.

Actually it has been THREE terrible years in a row, especially for those of us who like to be able to ride in SE WI. Trails here in Waukesha county (northern part) were open for a total of 3 days in the winter of '14-15, they never opened at all in the winter of '15-16, and this year were open 5 total days before Christmas and that will be it.

So, in the last 3 winter seasons, the local trails have been open a total of 8 days out of a possible 270 days. Less than 3% of the time. That is crazy.

The last 3 years, we've been lugging our sleds up north as much as we can. Big drain on $$$$ and on family life to pursue the sport we all love when one can't ride locally at all.

Now the question is, is it even worth considering buying a new sled. Is this the new normal? Obviously tough to predict the future, but this surely appears to be a strong pattern, and not an outlier of three years in a row.

Sorry guys I feel I am to blame, I found an excellent deal on a new snowblower so I bought it back in January. No snow since, I have not even started it yet! lol I have not ridden my sleds for a few years, some of those years are due to actually getting them back from where I had them stored (long story) and definitely due to no snow down here. I have the availability to ride in Price County Park Falls area whenever I want as I have a cabin there but even up north is hit or miss on warm ups and such. As stated from others, $$$$ and time away from work & family makes it tough to just head up north whenever. I can't imagine even thinking about buying a new snowmobile as all it would do is sit in the garage.

At this point, my 02 will last another 10 years due to only adding 150 miles per year.

Just gonna go out a whim …
On a whim!
And now, we interrupt this program, er, … thread, to present the trivia item for today (and a bit of Keweenaw/Copper Country lore):

What is a "whim"? and "On a whim"?

These horses are "on a whim".―――――――――So's this one.

whim
(noun) 2. (Mining & Quarrying) a horse-drawn winch formerly used in mining to lift ore or water.

The Copper Country connection? Here is a circular horse whim, (behind the flooded mine shaft shown in the foreground) from the 1840's on the Lake Superior Mines leased properties. (Photo courtesy of Pasty Cam.)
[I'll bet ya din't know dat! ;) ]

frnash, LOL interesting....I will still go out on a "whim" or (capricious notion) or "out on a limb" and say our season is completed for SE WI. Not sure what else to say about the above illustrations haha. I guess I learned something...I also enjoyed the artwork haha. Maybe I will be wrong and with my capricious notion and the end of the month will turn around.

WHIM:
noun
1.
an odd or capricious notion or desire; a sudden or freakish fancy:
a sudden whim to take a midnight walk.

(Definition dictionary.com) --- If you want a laugh type in WHIM in urbandictionary.com and read the definition. ( I wont post it here due to violation of rules I believe) LOL

Pretty sure we are completed for the year. What a great start before Xmas and terrible thereafter. I guess our club needs to start thinking about pulling out signs soon. March 1st and already calling it quits a couple years in a row now is depressing. On the plus side it is snowing now, at this point it is just further delaying my motorcycle riding. But I already do have 200miles on the Harley in February that is almost unheard of unless you like to freeze you butt off.
