Trails are great anywhere between Madison and Green Bay

Let me get this straight.....you got the sleds, truck, trailer and gear, and yet you complain??? Not sure where you are in Illinois, but you shouldn't have to trailer too far to find decent riding conditions. Unless time is your pressing issue, pack up and go to where the snow is.

80 to 150 miles should have you in the best of the best & been there for awhile after that not so good.

My 2 sleds paid $3900 Dad paid $1600 for his
My truck paid $2500 Dad paid $12k 6 years ago with 50k miles (02 F150)
2- 2 place clamshells paid $2500 for both and 1 open 4 place paid $1200

I have 1300 miles on already this year and loved every second of it. Not to be an @$$ but you don't need to spend that kind of $ to have fun. Can always downsize if it's really that big of a problem otherwise cross the border and ride!

Just to be fair, Indy, not many of us on here have the free time that a 17 year old does. You will learn that in 10 years or so.

Truck & trailer, whats the problem?

I'm asking the same thing...

You got all that because you live in Illinois so you always have to go to the snow. This is the odd year that the best snow for December is in the southern 1/2 of Wisconsin so you should really be saying something about all the extra miles you've put on the sleds with the time you have saved by not driving as many miles in the truck to find the snow. I know I loved only driving 60 miles to drop last Sunday, had a good ride, nice lunch and still made it home in time to watch the 3:00 football games.

Trailered 2 hours north last weekend and had great trails. Even better than I expected in adams county. Thanks to their club and groomers. Try it out kinda fun with some open fields you can rack the miles and still enjoy some woods
That ride took care of my irritation with the strange start to winter

Not to offend anyone, but I think I know where yenann is coming from. I had a week off and did trailer to south central Wisconsin. I rode for a day and a half and got bored and came back. I can only ride so many farm fields. I couldn't even get the wife to go. As far as rack up the miles, don't forget you are stopping evey 1 or 2 miles to cross a road. The guy I was riding with had a sore neck the next morning from looking both ways at all the road crossings. 350 miles of farm fields, they all look the same, GPS came in handy. I guess I'm spoiled from the UP and Canada.

Again, I did not intend to offend anyone, but farm field riding isn't for me or the wife. And yenann, I wish that is all that I had tied up in this sport. But then again, you never see a U-haul trailer being pulled by a hearst.

Yennan,

I can understand where you are coming from. I have talked to at least 3 guys today that are considering selling everything and giving up the sport. While it may be nice riding in southern and eastern WI right now, I can't see myself ever trailering there to ride! Heck, someone posted on another thread how the businesses don't seem to want them there and someone was flipped off by a driver in a car when they were just sitting at a crossing. Other areas haven't opened their trails yet and people in the area ask why? How many of us plan trips to southern WI in a normal snow year? I prefer pine trees and forests to corn fields, but to each his own.

Head towards middle/northeast wisconsin where the last storm went

Sleds and trailers were everywhere around Ironwood this past week. Conditions are thin but the groomer was out a few days ago. Tom Skilling said Chicago has not seen an inch of snow in 316 days..(not exact there)...I have a friend with a brand new Rush 800 but has'nt ridin it yet............ I was just looking at pics from the 99/2000 winter Northern Il had a blizzard and several other storms. We have to be getting closer to some big snows, maybe something will pop up like it has in the past.

It takes a lot of exploring to find good trails in this area. I've ridden every direction since I was 12 not any trail I haven't really been on. I know plenty of secrets and shared them in the past but nobody listens I just get these areas to myself LOL Kinda like the whole trail 3 idea, everybody wants to run north and south and get as far as possible. I did take a wide open run this weekend, there's some trails east of me flat smooth field running for miles. I put on 122 in 3.5 hrs, not bad IMO for around here.

I would have no problem riding farmland in deep snow & you can cover lots of miles like UP grades in excellent conditions. I knew which trails had the fewest road crossings & the most miles thru tree stands & swamps. Yep agree few if anyone plans trips for farm land trails but snow chasers do what they have to do to ride. I have not loaded up for central WI still waiting to ride from my doorstep & hope it is worth the wait. On the otherhand I rode 2400 miles last year in the best of conditions so maybe this is my bad year & worst out of 10 so far. Oh well........

"I can only ride so many farm fields." So being in the woods non-stop for hundreds of miles is better? I like it all. If there is snow and the trails are flat, I ride. The season is too short to be picky.

This is an intresting thread, I love to snowmoblile, I live in an area that has open fields, kettle moraine hills and forest and I love the fact we have snow and the bars and grills and so on are love in this, our club is love in this also and getting new members with this snow.
We all have a different ideal riding enviroment, which is good!! I only ride the u.p. once and a while, but I don't like to ride on the grade all the time, it's like the car ride up there, only ride the up north once in awhile because I can only look at so many trees.
Thats why we have a choice were we can ride when snow is abondent.
If we all didn't have different taste to ride in we would all beriding in the same area and that wouldn't be good.
Let's hope for more snow soon to make people alittle more positive in thinking ;)
Just my two cents, thanks for letting me throw them in the wishing well!!

We hear you and share your pain. Bought a new sled, trailer and truck w/in the last 2 yrs and limited time for me to get out - if conditions aren't right I'm screwed. But I will not give up. Making plans for the end of January for the UP and hoping it is not another short trip, again.

Consider posting for a ride buddy somewhere over the state line to show you around.
