This post is getting too serious. Did anybody notice the weather is stating to break? I can't wait to get the Harley out and rattle
some windows....ahhhhh, i mean put some miles on! Just kidding folks, I do have a Harley but ride in a respectable way to not
create any animosity. Bring on spring!!!

Motivated by this thread, I ordered a new set of pipes for my bike....2XLoud. If loud pipes save lives, I'm gonna live forever!

Using Snobuilder's theory I have a super quiet sled, so I can use up some of my noise footprint with the bike...plus chicks dig it.

I only pull the Harley thing outta my but to make a point about noise.....Here at home in rural se WI we have a bar a eighth mile away that is a nice destination point on a country ride....Most weekends you can hear grouos a HDers pullin out and pourin the beans to her....that rollin thunder chit sends a chill down my spine which is also known to me as freedom!.

Freedom for whom? For those who feel it's their right to make as much noise as they want without fear of repercussions, or freedom for those who feel they have the right to some peace and quiet? Obviously the "freedoms" in this scenario don't necessarily coincide and somebody is going to have their "freedom" violated.

Maybe it's been already said here but the

Harley pipes (on PUBLIC roads) vs. loud sled pipes (on PRIVATE land)

argument is old, tired and just plain NOT RELEVANT to one another!!!!!

Some people better be careful what they wish for or it might costing them out of their own pockets, eh?

Don't see me riding at night or in towns... First time I ever see a cop was with u last week! No mention of noise. :)
Sell me an orange 2015 trail sticker and get me chased down Midway! That cop could ride!

I'm not a fan of loud cans but what's loud to one person is not loud to the next person.
The guy that owned this land might think that a stock sled is too loud for all we know.

Have you ever heard some motorcycles, my gosh they are the loudest dang things out there and they go right by houses.
Now, I understand roads don't go over private property but same principle.

If you want less cans on the trails, I suggest putting up some signs at least, which I've never seen much of.
At least these could warn people to keep it quiet.

Buddah and Snocrazy, what trail did this happen on.
Just so that I'm prepared for the next time I'm up there (next year).

But isn't the issue here legal decibel levels and not whether the noise is being created on public or private property?

Right!...if a Harley with straight pipes BRAAAAAPS down a public road and no one can do or the cops DON'T do a thing about it

....did it make a noise?

( .... did it make a noise) If there's no one around to hear it ...did it make a noise. But if law enforcement doesn't do anything about it, it does make a noise if someone does hear it. I would like to see businesses refuse service to loud vehicles, be it sleds, bikes or trucks. Ban the Can thread If obviously over legal noise levels, a gas station could refuse to sell to them when they come in blipping the throttle, bikes and trucks do it all the time too. They have the right to refuse service, wish they would. We as a group need to self govern ourselves to keep from losing more trails. I know that it is not safe to confront the law breakers face to face (they can get hostile) If there were more business owners that would refuse service to the offenders, that may save some trails . Granted they would be able to get fuel, food whatever somewhere else. But maybe word would get around, if you are loud you may have issues finding services. All you people that have that gift of gab, should make mention of this when talking to business owners, managers, that have concerns about the state of sledding and closure of trails. That may impact their business, not by choice. If they choose to lose a small bit of business, it may save their entire business. I know that trail closure, or no more snowmobiles may not close them down completely, but it may well impact their retirement date, or amount of hours they have to be on site because they can't hire employees.

Noise, Its been a problem for many years. When I was younger the law enforcement used to do their jobs and stop people with noisy cars, trucks, bikes and sleds. Now they don't want to waste there time because it will just go to court and some lawyer with get the person off with no fine. The Judge will look at the officer and say, why are you wasting my time with this? My father taught me to tread lightly around people (ride on the pilot jet not the main), I know we don't have carbs anymore so it would mean just off idle. I have also taught my kids to ride slow and quiet when riding in areas that people reside in with the dirt bikes and sleds.
So the problem will never get fixed until us parents show our kids to be more responsible and for the laws to actually be enforced and administered by the courts.

Buddah and Snocrazy, what trail did this happen on.

Well he probably originally saw us on the trail (411 - Nahma Grade trail) south of CR440 but we were off the trail and west on CR 442 when he pulled up beside us...........Delta county sheriff's patrol..........Cat 7000, essentially same as my Viper.......except orange........

Here is another thought as far as the landowner and noise. We have land in the Cadillac area and the trails runs through a large section of it. Its fairly wide open and a high speed trail. Most of the noise we hear when is the noise of the tracks humming coming down the trail at high speed, and it has gotten significantly louder over the past 5 years. i assumed it was do to the bigger lug tracks or maybe the more aggressive designs on the newer sleds make more noise at high speeds (like a mudder tire on a truck) Most of the time you cant hear the engine, just the track noise. Is this section of trail in question in a high speed area? If so this may be part of his noise complaint, along with loud exhaust.

Yet, another thought with the ever growing number of four strokes. I dont care how quiet the four strokes are, their basey exhaust note will still vibrate my house as they pass by. When I'm outside, I can barely hear them. But if I go inside, I don't so much hear them as feel them. Kinda like how you can feel the base from a car stereo before they get close enough to hear. Its like that song, all about that base, bout that base, bout that base..... It doesn't take long until it gets on your nerves. ;)
Maybe this is what the property owner is experiencing.
