Ooooo, I like the idea of impounding sleds that fail the noise test, right on the spot. Tow em to impound for 3 days, at a cost of $100/day minimum, on top of a bigger ticket. Hitting their wallet and ruining their vacation would get the point across. One would think

I totally agree, then 2nd offense triple or more the fine. Or make them fix the noise issue before release from impound. Desperate times demand desperate measures. IMO the times merit something has to change to keep us from losing the sport we love. Or having just isolated trails to ride as versus the interconnected trail system that we do now. The word needs to get around that its not tolerated.

Not sure how reliable this is (hearsay only), but there are areas in Canada that are writing tickets for any sled that does not have the OEM factory installed exhaust no matter what the decibal levels are............

Not sure about this. Just wondering why they would even check if the sled is already quite.

I believe that is the law in Canada. I have not been there for several years, but was advised of the laws by a district director at Hearst.

The law is written to address a set db level.
Writing tickets based on silencer appearance only was tested in court and failed.
What other freedoms do you want to give up and allow the law to willy nilly make arrests and or hand out tickets for based on appearance only?

I live right on the trail in St Germain about 1/2 a mile from a very popular resort..... when a family on 2 ups go past, its only right at my house that I hear the sleds ( very quiet) when it's the one up "canned" sled, I can hear the sled coming all the way from the resort, past my house and down to the next stop sign...... I can feel for the guy on trail 2 and what he puts up with...again because I have a resort down the road, on Friday/Sat nights ant bars time, I might as well set up a lawn chair and watch the "canned" sleds car by at 2am heading home to sleep it off.......I'm awake at 2am listening to Braaappppp many many many times...........heck, some piped 4 strokes rattle the windows of the house...........crazy stuff guys.

Really not trying to be a smart-azz but which was there first? You or the trail? If you're answer is the trail then I'd say you should have known what you were getting into........

We had an incident a little ways from here a couple years ago where a guy from downstate bought a piece of ground that had a trail through it for the last 30+ yrs......he immediately closed it off eliminating access to a really nice riding area.......not a real popular guy with the "locals"......

Wow! I sure hope you are kidding with this post. After reading your posts, unfortunately I don't think you are. I happen to know several Harley owners and they happen to be some of the nicest people I have ever met. I was just curious if it is possible for you to post a comment on this site that is actually positive and does not contain words that imply swear words. Maybe it is me, but I like to go thru life with the glass half full. You should try it sometime....it is not half bad.

I specifically bought the house because of the trail being there....I'm not complaining or saying close the trail... all I am saying is that I understand the guy on trail 2.........the folks that come up for a weekend of fun don't get it when "canning" a home at 2am with Braaaaapppppp...... there here for 2 days and go home, the property owner is here all winter...... the land owner is catching on and does understand the "stock" sled vs. "canned" sled.....that guy on trail 2 should be a wakeup call to all of us who love the sport.....

Shelby 369, I'm in the same boat as you. Bought house to be on trail. We're in a residential area with 20 mph speed limit. 99% of the sleds observe that. It's the 1% that kills the sport with their loud cans at 2 A.M. and speeding. Those that want racing cans on their sleds need to stay on the track and not the trail. It will ruin our sport and it has started with trail 2.

Never said harley owners couldn't be nice ppl.
I find it interesting that you didn't take issue with them saying it would be a good idea to srart impounding sleds based on the appearance of there silencer but once LOUD OBNOXIOUS HARLEYS get mentioned as needing the SAME treatment you take issue with me and my comment.
Playing the obsurd against the obsurd got my point across.

We snowmobilers are our worst enemy. This past weekend I was staying in Iron River, MI at the Americinn hotel right off the grade. The sleds with cans are so loud, I had to run an App on my phone for white noise. They did keep me and my family up. The idiots would crack it between each stop sign during the night when the rest of us were attempting to sleep.

My suggestion - you could have the DNR sitting right in town and pick out these d-bags at the stop signs. Instant fine and pull their sticker. Word would travel quick and most people would have their stock muffler back on.

Hate to say it but this problem is nothing new. I remember loud cans/tuned pipes being an issue already back in the late 80's but not to current extremes.

First, when you call Harley owners hacks, you are implying they are not nice people. Secondly, you are missing the larger point of my post which is the constant negative approach along with the constant implied swearing you use. Maybe it is just me but it gets a little old after awhile. The thing is I think that you do make a lot of good points and raise a lot of good questions but it gets lost in how you say it. BTW, I actually agree with you on the Harley noise versus the snowmobile noise and the double standard.
