Western UP Trail 2 will be closed.....

Banning the cans wont work because old people will still not like the sound of mid 1990's stock ZRT's ripping by. My 98 stock ZRT was loud. Also my stock SRX wide open is loud mostly through the air box hood area, not the exhaust. It has a huge muffler/silencer. I ride that trail so im curious to where? the trail has a area east of Ramsay where the trails goes into private property. You can tell because there are big gates that are open off the side.

Fines, Impounds, Out of service until repairs are completed....all GREAT ideas, but even with a few offenders being busted, and the social media helping the cause, there will always be a few that will roll the dice. The commercial vehicle industry is the first to come to mind. How many small towns have engine brake ordinances, not because of engine brakes, but because of straight pipes. How long will it be that states start passing California emissions standards (because a rolling coal pickup blew a Prius full of soot?) and you will get a yearly vehicle (car, motorcycle, truck, etc.) inspection and when the vehicle passes inspection you will be issued a sticker? We snowmobilers are the beneficiaries of the use of thousands of miles of public land that many people before us fought for and as we all have witnessed, can easily be removed with the stroke of a pen....or, if we're lucky they will put a $500 price on a trail pass to thin the herd.

I would wager that 90's ZRTs and 98 SRX's, noisy that they may be, are not causing the problems in 2015. It's not just old people that don't like the extreme decibels - pretty much anyone not at a drag strip.

I agree - when my 10 year old son and I were watching the sleds go by on Saturday night, almost all of the noisy ones were newer sleds. Actually, I don't think a single one was old - at least more than 10 years old.

Ooooo, I like the idea of impounding sleds that fail the noise test, right on the spot. Tow em to impound for 3 days, at a cost of $100/day minimum, on top of a bigger ticket. Hitting their wallet and ruining their vacation would get the point across. One would think

I bet a strip search would really get your panties wet.

Signed trail pass stating no aftermarket exhaust on trails.

What if the aftermarket silencer was quietter or at least meets the lawfull db limits?...why would you eliminate that manufacturers freedom to build and sell a product?...do you hate free enterprise or simply not understand it?

I think it's implied by most on here that aftermarket is ok if it doesn't increase noise levels beyond stock, but probably few of them do. From an enforcement standpoint, I assume it would be easier to measure sound levels than to pop hoods and ascertain weather an exhaust system is OEM or aftermarket.

Impounding POS loud asst harleys wouldn't be a bad idea though.
I'm a landowner and after 50 years am finally sick and tired of them noisy harley ownin hacks!

When they starting running harleys on the snowmobile trail behind your property then that would be relevant to this discussion.

II didnt say all the sleds that were loud were old? I said banning cans wont matter cause older people (or anybody who dont like it) will not understand when a ZRT rips by that has a stock exhaust. they will think "there's goes another loud sled!" If sleds with stock exhaust are made to the specifications and meet safe decibel meter readings they should be good to go.

As a cabin owner in Conover Wi a 1/4 mile off trail 8 , I can tell you that in my 10 years there . I can personally
say that there are more and more loud sleds ripping by in far greater numbers then ever . And considering by me there are 3 stop signs in about a quarter mile . It's nothing but a loud drag race from sign to sign . Now I am a sledder myself and don't have much of a problem with this . But I know a few of my winter neighbors do . and if they can have there way they would shut it down . Every weekend anywhere from a 1000 to prob 4/5000 sleds go by in 48 hours . and even if 20% have loud can's it wears on you . It's dead quite in the woods in the winter and I can hear sleds a 1/2 mile or more away at night .
All I am saying is the Loud sleds are ruining it for the sport . Like it or not , there are 1000's of home owners by trails in N Wi and a lot are tired of it ..

It doesn't surprise me that them calling for the ban of aftermarketeers would also like to see my freedom to express an alternate
POV be silenced.<<<<LOL...pun!

I see that most of the ban the can zealots on here do not distinguish the loud ones from the 87 db compliant silencers by
calling for anything NOT factory supplied to be IMPOUNDED based on appearance alone and no one takes them to task for that idea.
If you want to tell that to my face I will not be a calm as I am in this forum.

I don't appreciate anyone saying I need the same harsh penalties as some drug dealing thug as to have my property impounded for
a mod to my sled.
If you ask me those types of over the top comments carry more disrespect than my sarcastic response to them....
and IMHO they ONLY deserve the mild ridicule that the sarcasm delivers.

BTW i too have a trail runnig through a part of my property just 250' away from the house and the only sled that
caught my ear this season was a FX nytro with a race number on it.....LOL...loud, but no where near as loud as most hacked Harley pipes.

ATV's are allowed on all the town roads here like the one at the end of my driveway. The piped 4 stroke ATV's that fly by 9 months out of the year are WAAAAY more obnoxous than any sleds I have notices in 13 years.

This post is getting too serious. Did anybody notice the weather is stating to break? I can't wait to get the Harley out and rattle
some windows....ahhhhh, i mean put some miles on! Just kidding folks, I do have a Harley but ride in a respectable way to not
create any animosity. Bring on spring!!!

I believe that I was the one who originally started the “Ban the Can” statement. It has been stated before and I will tune in as well, the intent was to ban those sleds with horrific and deafening noise. I have a 4 stroke that I would love to lose 12-15 pounds from the sled weight with a can, but will not do it for fear it will be over the allowable decibel level. JMO

I live close to a trail and happen to like hearing snowmobiles. I cant hear them in the house because it is so insulated. Have to be outside or open windows to enjoy.

You ever heard of noise programs for people who live close to airports?
The government pays for your sound proofing. (windows, insulation, etc. )

Yeah it sucks a trial is being closed. There are always going to be idiots in the world who will ruin things for others.
Hope this gets worked out. DNR needs to enforce noise laws on a regular basis and problem will be solved and they will have a nice little revenue generator.
