What method do you use to sell your used sled?

You don't have to pay sales tax on your trade in value, just the difference... same goes for just about anything you purchase from a dealer that gets titled.

Found a weird deal with rebate checks from menards. Bought items totaling 9.47 came to $10.10 with tax. had a $10 rebate used it. No tax charged. Still have .53 on the rebate card. So somehow must fall under same sales tax rules as trade ins.

I believe that works the same also. I recieved a $1000 golden ticket (voucher) for purchasing my 15 rmk to use on a 16. I purchased me 16 using the ticket, and didn't have to pay tax on the $1000 (same concept as menards rebate)

I saw this also. and u know if u use your rebate during a 11 sake u get that 11% also. last yr I collected close to 7g in menards rebates and points checks.

People that trade sleds in are either lazy or don't need the money. The dealer is making money on your trade AND the new sled. That's fine if you like your dealer that much, but I personally need the money more than they do. It's not much of a hassle to put a FREE ad on Craigslist and answer a couple of texts or calls. Set a price that is fair and be firm-you know what your sled is worth more than anyone.

Not always the case, my buddy just traded in and got more for trade than I thought he would private sale, + tax savings. Net value of almost 11K on a 2 year old sled.

IMO, you need to evaluate every situation differently re: the trade in to dealer vs sell outright thing. I have bought & sold many things on craigslist including sleds but when a dealer offers you $1,000 less than what you "might" be able to get through CL & then you factor in the $500 sales tax savings is it really worth it to sell your sled outright to save $400 - $500. For me the answer would be NO. Now once you start talking about $1,500 or more difference then yeah selling outright via a means like CL makes the most economic sense.

Does it really make much difference how the dealer plugs in trade in value vs the bottom line? A little more tax money not going to kill anyone. This sounds more like a head game than a value game for both parties. :)

agreed , one idea is to tell the dealer you have no trade and get the best cash price you can- then in a couple days if you change your mind, ask the dealer for a trade price on your used sled, then you find out what you are really getting for your old sled

As long as you are willing to pay MSRP you can get a great trade-in deal

Some may not be able to calculate the exact cost difference between trade, and sell on your own, but there IS an exact answer to those questions. (Effort of doing your own sale/marketing aside)

I actually had a car dealer show me two options one time for a trade-in scenario, depending on if I wanted a high trade value or a low purchase price. Kind of funny - I think he thought I was going to take the bait.

I sold it on my own and did much better, in that case at least.

Seriously what is your obsession with hating on Doo??? Sounds like you are just jealous!! My buddy just sold his 16 XRS for 10,700. Pretty close to 11,000. I'm sorry your Poos And Yamaha don't come close in resale. I just saw a 17 Sidewinder, brand new, for 12,600. What's that, 5,500 less then what they sold for in November??
