I think this says it all...
When riding on the trail, just remember when you let others coming the other way, the last person is zero....not sure why it is so confusing.....count up from zero from the last person sop we could pay attention to how many people are in your group. Thanks

i never ever judge someone on the hand signals..you never know if a rider caught up on that group and the "last rider"did not know it.

Had that happen to me a bunch of times last weekend. But then it stinks when you can't see how many people are in the group. Best to just pull over and let them pass.

Also stinks when people who don't wear fingered gloves, so that you never know how many are in the group since you can't see how many fingers they got up.

Just my opinion, but I'd rather folks keep their hands on their bars than try and tell me how many are behind them. Can't count how many times I've seen sleds dart due to them trying to signal the # of riders behind them.

what about the guy behind him not with them ort the crew 100 yards behind them.stay on your side of the trail and you dont have to worry about how many guys are coming

handsignals flampignals

X2 on this! When in the groomer we have people give us the signal they are the last one and there is another group right behind them. We never believe the hand signals. And yes we see people go off the trail trying to signal us. Keep your hands on the bars and other riders just keep it in your head there are more coming, stay on your side of the trail.

Yup fun thread

yearly thread...fun.......what if they stand and give hand signals?

As long as their mohawk or shovel don't blow off and hit me in the goggles, I quess it's OK.

Like it or not, we always use hand signals. If the other group doesn't, that's fine by me.

If I'm running last in a group, and I know there are more behind us, I just use the closed fist and motion backwards with my thumb.

Who cares...what if that person stays warm with mittens vs gloves? I guess they should put the gloves on just for you huh? Get real!

I tend to use hand signals when running down the rail beds, but any other trails, nope, don't use them.

Exactly, never figured out why we feel the need to use hand signals.

I use em whenever convenient. I had a dude/chick almost run into me during an evening ride. I was going about 10 and he/she darted at me and almost hit my ski. I noticed being I was so close that they had their hand up with 3 fingers. Hummm, night time, twisty and ice conditions and you take the time to tell me how many sleds behind you when I can see them for myself?

I agree I use them when I can; I have two newbies riding with me this year I think that it is more important for them to get a feel for the sleds than to give hand signals on their first ride.
I will of course educate them about the rules and proper protocol when riding and we will go from their; my main goal is to keep them safe and show them a good time.

Signal to Groomer

My Hubby was out groomer Friday night and came upon a group who gave him signals. He held up his closed fist at the last rider(asking if he was last) and the rider thought he was pissed. Lack of communication, can't fix stupid!

What I hate is when I have more than 5 persons behind me, then I have to take both hands off the handlebars. I never ride with more than 10 behind me as my feet would get too cold and it would be a pain taking my boot off all the time.
