Loud cans

So here is the law in Michigan regarding modified snowmobile exhaust. My question is where is the enforcement on this? I have yet to see a DNR warden sitting on the side of the trail measuring sound from a set distance looking for violators in both states WI and MI. If you ask me the enforcement is skimpy in both states I have been in. Yeah its common sense to BRAAAP in appropriate places but how do you teach common sense to D-bags? Enforcement and monetary fines to the perpetrators?

Sec. 82126. (1) A person shall not operate a snowmobile under any of the following circumstances:

(2) Except as provided under subsection (3), a person shall not operate a snowmobile unless the snowmobile is equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation from which noise emission does not exceed either of the following:

(a) For a snowmobile manufactured after July 1, 1977 and sold or offered for sale in this state, 78 decibels at 50 feet, as measured using the 2003 society of automotive engineers standard J192.

(b) For a stationary snowmobile manufactured after July 1, 1980 and sold or offered for sale in this state, 88 decibels, as measured using the 2004 society of automotive engineers standard J2567.

(3) A person is exempt from the requirement of subsection (2) under either of the following circumstances:

(a) While operating a snowmobile during an organized race on a course that is used solely for racing.

(b) While operating a snowmobile on private property, with the permission of the private property owner, in preparation for an organized race, if the operation of the snowmobile is in compliance with applicable local noise ordinances.

Last time I was in the Iron River area someone in the group was tagged for it. $180. They sit along trail 2 all the time and will nail you. Also had another friend get one few years ago east of Hurley in the UP. Can't speak for the UP now as we've quit riding their altogether.

Here I am thinking: How can there be 62 responses about some guy who has some digestive problems after eating beans, hot wings and chili?

Oh, snowmobile cans. Yeah, those are irritating too!

Not to mention the majority of them like SnoStuff's actually rob HP from the motor! Kids will be kids I guess. I kinda like my quiet 4 stroke! How people can ride with that crap in their ears all day is beyond me.

unless you ride a bike and have to deal with all you impolite non road watching talking on your phone cagers. don't you dare tell me i should baffle my harley. you don't know how many times i had to pull in the clutch and braap the throttle so you would pay attention at an intersection or stop merging into my lane. loud sleds are not necessary due to you are not having to share the road with cagers. i'm just saying lay off the bikers, we have a reason to be loud out there. i don't run drag pipes but i do run tru dual hooker tuned flows. they can be quiet but they can drive nails if i want them to.

Loud cans (or pipes) = "look at me"

I ride a bike and as anyone who has ridden has or will at some time come into a situation where other motorists don't see you. YOU need to be proactive and be ready at all times!

I surely wouldn't rely on an obnoxious exhaust system to get me out of trouble with a car or truck, riding skills will help a lot more, as will some hi-viz gear! :)

Agree 150% Back in the day I remember getting a ticket in my cobra for a loud exhaust exceeding the allowable decible limit. I then asked him what my DB was.....no answer. I then proceeded to point out all the loud *** harleys......no answer. It got thrown out in court.

Pretty laim to compare road bikes to sleds. Soccer moms kill bikers at a much higher rate than they kill sledders. I am against loud cans, but what is loud to one sounds way cool to others. You have to admit a HD with Vance & Hines pipes sounds sweet. A cat (kawasaki) with a snostuff or other low end can sounds horribly obnoxious. To loud is when your at the gas pump and can't hear yourself think as the guy with the loud sled removes his ear plugs to say, "What????"

not to be a DB but that red button under your thumb will do the same thing.
every one I own has one all the way back to my 1957 bsa that I had new baffles made for last yr.
I have to say there is nothing worse than getting trapped behind some buisnessman in leather on a sat riding around on his off the shelf bad *** alter ego with stright pipes. if in the rag top I pull over let some time pass then fininsh my drive.

I always wondered why some people constantly blip their throttle while sitting at an intersection. Loud pipes don't save lives. Pipes are pointed in the wrong direction.

Loud cans have no place on the trails. We have enough problems with people trespassing on private property, this only add more fuel to the fire.

It's not so much the can (well it is for some) it's so you don't burn a belt up. Not good for your belt & clutches holding your throttle in 1 spot partially open just to move the sled a few feet

I am lost on this one Indy???? If they are sitting at an intersection wouldn't the rider have a hand on the brake. Not a good idea to hold the throttle steady to hold you in place at a stop. But triggering the throttle isn't any better if you are smacking the primary into the side of the belt either.

I own the Bar in Bergland and I stopped 4 guys from coming in last weekend because of loud pipes. 11pm at night and I could hear him going back and forth down by the Bergland dock for 15 minutes. I am 4 blocks from the Bergland dock and the sled was loud. Then he rips through town cracking his throttle and stops in my parking lot. I told him I did not want his business (the words and language I used were a little different) and to take his sled back to what ever state he came from and run back and forth in front of his mother's house at the same time at night. You can have a pipe and not run your sled like an idiot. I have no tolerance for it, if you guys don't like seeing the cops around don't do crap to bring them. This kid tried to remind me of the money he spends in the UP. All I can say is we need tourism but we don't need people that think they can come up here and disrespect our towns. I had a record year at the bar and it amazes me how many people have gone through my doors and how few problems we have had. You guys and gals are great, please don't stick up for the very few who think they can come here and do what ever they like. tom@berglandbaybar.com

Thank you for that post Tom. Now may I please ask a question.....
Substitute the guy on the sled, for a hot summer night, windows open, and four guys on Harleys with straigh pipes roll into town doing the same thing. Let's imagine these are bandana wearing, leather clad, pseudo tough looking biker dudes -
Would you walk out the door and tell them you didn't want their business?
Seriously - I would like to know your "honest" opinion.
Thanks.
