Trail permits

I suspect record low permit sales this year, I am not planning on riding here this year at all with the weather situation. As far as cost of permit, well I bought a gallon of Poo VES plus oil yesterday for $49. That is robbery.

I pay $36 at Honda East. $49 is total robbery.

I normally don't post on here but here in eastern Iowa we pay $75 to a private club, $35 if you work on the trails. None of the trails are groomed and they are about 1 sled wide. We also pay an extra $15 on our registration starting this year. Then we have a county trail that connects most of our private trails that we have to buy a $11 pass that they groom 1 or 2 times a year. So with that being said my group drives through Wisconsin every year to get to Michigan for $45 a year for a pass.

I thought i was the only one who thought Tractor Supply was lame....Fleet Farm is still my favorite, but not close to me. There is a Farm and fleet close though which is a close second....

Where in eastern Iowa, Dubuque, Clayton, or Allamakee County? I ride in Clayton County when there is snow around Garnavillo, Farmersburg, Elkader, Giard, Monona; and sometimes towards Harper's Ferry and such in Allamakee County. Yes, the trails are 6.5' wide but their normally groomed in Clayton (In fact, the last time I was there riding two years ago they where flatter than the UP's trials). Allamakee has the most challanging trails I've riden on along the River. Correct, their not groomed but they are sure fum and challanging. And the view along the river is just as nice as the view in the UP (obviously in my opinion).

I say we look at this from a different approach.

Those that ride off-trail only use the trails a minimal amount just to get where they are going, so they should pay less.

Those that only take one trip a year cause minimal damage, so they shouldn't pay the full freight either.

Those that ride every weekend, high-mileage riders, etc., cause the most trail damage, and therefore should pay more.

And remember, the heavier the vehicle, the more damage it causes to the trail, so Yamaha 4-stroke riders have to pay an extra fee:rolleyes:

It comes down to user fees - yes folks, I am talking about putting up toll booths on the trails. You use them, you pay, you don't use them, you don't pay, simple as that!

They occaisionally have them here @ Farm & Fleet too .........

Yup! you buy a 50# bag of chicken feed and they give you a dozen baby (roosters) chickens free.
Whoo Hoo! and the city slickers, think they got a deal, until they get home and find out from the neighbor there is an ordinance against raising chickens in the city.

My opinion about the Michigan trail permit fee is this; The clubs do an outstanding job taking care of the trails and this costs money I get that.Is the $45.00 fee a good deal or a bad deal as compared to the other areas? I don't care we are taking about our state and what happens here.At $45.00 I think the price is getting to high for the people that are low income and the beginner sledders.Again we all know that the sport is expensive.Just like everything else every body wants more money from us for, sleds, gas, lodging and permits.Again I know that things cost money but the clubs can and will use every dime they get (and doing a great job and not faulting them for that ) but if will never be enough money thats the way it is for everything. What this discussion should be about is how we can be creative and find ways to increase the funds for the trails with out raising permit fees.I think a discounted 3 year permit should be offered at the time you register your sled and that would be fair for the Michigan residents.I also believe that if lower permit price was there that more permit would be sold and that would make up more total fund available for the trail fund.

Problem with a lower price for permit is it also drives up the distruction of the trails. It has been determined that $45 doesn't cover the current expenses. A three year permit pkg. is a good idea on a new sled purchase to encourage someone to get established in their new found sport and to help retain new riders.

On a side note: how far from the Race track are you in Marne? I own some land next to the track and was just in a bidding war for the old Veteranarians house that is connected to the fair grounds on the west side.

At $45.00 I think the price is getting to high for the people that are low income and the beginner sledders.

I understand that and it's unfortunate for the people who already live there but I don't think low income people will be coming from WI to ride in MI to begin with. Gas in truck up there in back for me is $150, lodging $75-100/night. I know a lot of people in my area who try to ride here when we have the snow, they have $500 sleds, it doesn't justify for them to go on a trip period. But, I LOVE your idea of the lower price permit for residents with the 3 year, (possibly 2 would be a better idea though?) I think they should get SOME discount, like $75 for 2 years would sound about right to me. Nothing huge but something as many people don't have a choice where they want to ride. I go up there because I want to go there.

Thank you John. Unfortunity it seems like your the only one upper there that gets it. Thanks for your hard work.

Indy 500, your response about pocket change was a tad insulting. Have you had an economics course in high school yet? (BTW, I had economic and statistic courses in high school and college so don't bother responding to me unless you have something constuctive to say to me that entails actual knowledge. I'll get back to you about that packet change later after my family and I had fun doing something different then the same railroad grade and tree over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over...) I'm talking about intangibles, which only a few in this thread seem to understand.

if MI is so friggin boring, then why are u even on this website..this site is mostly midwestern, and u r obviously more intersted in seeing other places..we spend our money in the midwest, and occasionally go out west..we support our clubs in our midwest states and the businesses that support snowmobilers and need our support..we travel where the snow is whether its MI,WI, or MN..we pay our trail passes in all three states because thats what it takes to support the system. polaris rider, indy 500 and the others are correct..we dont need staticians as u claim u are to say that 100% trail funding from the passes is wrong..no matter what the cost, its a small fraction of the total cost of the trip no matter what state u ride in.
