Almost 50 Snowmobile Citations Given During Derby Weekend

My two issues with getting stopped was the size of the group and the location of said checkpoint. This was out in the middle of the woods, NOT an open area. I felt it was a WAY bigger safety issue with stopping that amount of sleds, on one of the most busy weekends of the year, right on the trail system. How about pick out a field, stop sign, parking lot/area? Instead they were parked at a 90 degree corner, three sleds/officers, stopping anything and everything. I too am with Coldsmoke and others agreeing the need for enforcement, but there is surely a time, place and a way of doing it without making you feel harrased and actually endangering the group and other riders...its a wonder why I do mostly offtrail riding!!!

I agree with you but the dragnet is placed to catch fish. I came upon on a dragnet in a farm field in Walworth county WI on a Saturday afternoon ride in late 90s. I was not doing anything wrong but did not want to deal with it due to short ride time. So I banged a U turn & rode the otherway. Enforcement turned heads but I didn't do anything wrong & was long gone for my short ride. Enforcement has learned to place the net where they can isolate the catch. In that case trapped & have to deal with it.

Doesn't bother me one bit. Checking for proper registration, they are just doing their job. Running radar at night to make sure everyone is obeying the night time 55 mph law, just doing their job. Doing a registration check, and finding someone who is over the legal limit while riding, great, keep up the good work. I woudn't call it "harrassment" at all.

X2

It's invasive and disrespectful to the 95% of people that do

I don't have anything to hide so I personally don't see a problem, Yes, when you get stopped/checked 5 count em 5 times in one day, it gets a little old, but I am not gonna let it ruin my day, just another story to tell!

id have to say imo these types of checks are long,,,long overdue,,,,,,if you have nothing to hide then theres no problem ,,,,but if your ricky rocket well then it means brake ,,,not throttle,,,,or if drinking ,,,yea id complain to ,,,,,,,and wow 20 to 30 min for 60 people , ya that will be a life changer,,,,,,,id gladly have a trailside check or 2 ,rather than almost have the accident that i had to go thru from the ricky rocket,,{1 or 2 beer with lunch guy }that caused my accident,,,then took off so sheriff didnt get his name,,,, dont worry im not complaining ,i had good ins,and the months in hospital was great everyone did everything for me,{vacation} the 30 to 40 surgerys ,, i got to know the people in surgery room,,and heck i dont even have to work anymore,,,,ok ill stop now,,,but just think ,,,theyre not just out there to piss everyone off,,with a registration check,,,,there out there to make you think twice before doing something that will ultimatly reck your day or someone elses day or even life ,,,,,,,,im done raggen now,,, have a nice day,,,,im gonna go look at some more trail pics

How can any true American say it's good that they are doing this kind of enforcement?
It's an ambush & not how we as Americans should be treated, ever!!!
Hope they start coming in your homes to see if your doing anything you shouldn't be!?
Come on people, get your heads out before it's too late!!!
If your doing something wrong then fine, but if your minding your own biz & theres no laws being broke, visually or by radar or other devices, than it's BS!!!

You people can not be that afraid of others on the trail or anywhere else, that you want your rights taken away!!!!

GOD BLESS!

If you don't want to be around the traffic of events like Derby weekend, or the upcoming Eelpout Festival in Walker, MN, my suggestion is go somewhere else. About 5 years ago, a group of us were riding near Valhalla in Bayfield County, and a truck was right next to the trail crossing, on the shoulder of the road. I was leading, so I pulled out a little, got off my sled, and waved our group through the intersection. After all of our group had passed, I jumped on my sled and crossed. I get to the other side and a DNR rookie was hanging on to the back of my sled. So I pull off to the side, and this a..clown thinks he is going to take my sled to chase down the rest of my group. I tell him "Not without a court order or a bullet through my melon is anyone taking my sled." So I sit there for a half hour as he checks my history. The rest of the group kept going, but I knew where we were headed. My point was to the DNR rookie was...why are you parked so nobody can see any car traffic from the trail? You are gonna get somebody killed!! He said, this is how we are trained. So, who is leading this group of commies? Law enforcement is one thing, but creating situations that endanger people is another thing. No common sense whatsoever...

Another thing... I'd rather have the DNR out there any day of the week. Why????
What.... you think I'm gonna rely on everyone to police themselves???
ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!! If that was the case every trail in the state would be closed....

So you were at a stop sign, and had to cross the road? If so, you thought you should just wave everyone through? Do you do that when in your car?

I agree, he should not have parked where he was blocking the view to make a safe crossing, I also agree that he cannot take your sled, how come no one in your group, after a half an hour, came back to see where you were?

"and waved our group through the intersection"

Is this what most groups do? I just happened to see a group do this and thought it may have been the dumbest thing ive ever seen on the trail.

Im driving thru Marenisco. Just on the edge of town coming from Wakefield there is a stop sign. Leader is flying and slides to a stop, shuts sled off, stands in middle of the road and waves 6-7 others thru, fires up his sled and goes at least 90 and passes all of them(those that have been there know this area is 15mph speed limit as there are houses on both sides) and repeats the same procedure at the next stop sign and then does the same at the final stop sign in town. I watched the whole thing in amazement.

If the cops being out there would have stopped this BS then bring them on.

I think being stopped on a public trail system during one of the busiest weekends in sno-country where it is known that probably the majority of people are drinking or drunk on sleds, and comparing it to big-brother entering our homes with no warrant are two completely different things. Thanks coldone for taking this thread completely out of context!

When riding with a group of Harleys, this is what we do. 20 or 30 bikes roll on through.

How about this scenario: There was once a drug bust in your neighborhood, now the police randomly search every home on the street once a week because there MIGHT be another drug dealer in the neighborhood. That would be OK right? Police can barge in whenever they want. Wheteher I'm doing anything wrong or not. Why not go over my tax records while your there. Got any trans fat foods? That's no good, have to haul you in. You smoke? Have you ever had anyone in your home who doesn't? That's a violation.
Slippery slope into a police state my friends. Where does it end?

Sounds like a funeral escort motorcycle, as used in AZ, they block the cross traffic in one intersection until the funeral procession clears the intersection, then zoom ahead to swap places with the lead 'cycle for the next intersection.

Maybe a "funeral escort wannabe"? If he keeps that up he may get his wish!

Some of you people shouldn't leave your homes without police protection, if your that scared of other people & that worried about what they're doing!
Thats why we have too much goverment & goverment dipsshhiittss with too much control, because you people are blind, so blind!
Too much policing is too much goverment!

The answer for needing to be stopped or ambushed in this case, is to have to show your proof of insurance & proof of registration to get your trail sticker! If you have a trail sticker on your sled, you have proven your legal & ready to ride!

Coldone, what do you mean? I know when I buy my trail sticker at Krupp's, I have never been asked to show proof of insurance or registration for my sled.
