Dieselgate - VW TDI

Doubtful many consumers will want the noncompliant hassels. Most peeps gas & go drivers of mass produced autos not looking for a tuner for acceptable performance. Former CEO being charged in criminal court today..... Like I said someone could go to jail over this & will be interesting to see what events evolve.
I'm thinking VW will have to fix these rides before they can roll down the road again. EPA will not allow this mess to not be cleaned up

Yeppers EPA has to see this as a threat to their standards so will be looking for resolution from VW. Probably will be a reflash of some sort as easy way out to meet standards at least one would hope that would be the solution. Peeps not going to be happy if huge drop in mpg and/or performance hp. Idk probably no win for consumer & VW if performance falls way off to meet requirements.....Purchase ROI could be all upside down. VW should have just done the right thing from the get go and if no market in USA for clean diesel then so be it......better than this mess!

Give us better diesel and this issue is solved. Plus all the trucks out there running diesel will benefit from better mileage. And farm equipment and construction equipment, etc. I suspect the mileage will go down to what is on the window sticker and some law firms will figure out how these people were duped by what is on the sticker.

If those law firms are able to successfully win at getting the sticker mileage, maybe I am owed something on my high performance Audi with a sticker mileage of 21mpg, but for the life of me I get nothing better than 20mpg. However, it is the most awesome ride up to 175 MPH!

I'm not sure why USA uses dirty diesel gas?? ....I thought it was a capacity reason with Europe consuming most of clean diesel gas for their clean diesel tech. Can't use what you can't get thus the problem to meet EPA standards.

They get good diesel and we get corn gas! At least our gas taxes are lower

What is "dirty diesel gas? The term "Clean Diesel" refers to engine technology and fuel sulfur content/fuel spec on exhaust emissions. Our diesel fuels have transformed from higher sulfur content to ULSF, (ultra low sulfur fuel). T-4 is the current reg for new engine tech. I think there is one more advanced engine reg to go.

We own a 2013 Passat TDI. First, We love the car!!!!!!!!!!! I did not buy it because it was so called clean, I bought it because it get 40+ mpg and diesel is cheaper than gas most weeks here in central Illinois. I am sure most people that were buying a TDI was doing it for the same impression, cheaper gas, better mileage. I assumed that the car was running to epa specs. Anyways, This was the smartest move auto move I have ever made. The fact is that VW cheated and will pay dearly but they still make a good quality vehicle. I don't think VW will be going anywhere, they will pay the dues and bounce back. As for the EPA, well, they are crooks to but we won't get into that.

Just quick fact Wife drives 500 miles a week. 26k a year
For a car that gets 30 mpg (gas Passat) = 866 gallons consumed
For her Passat tdi 42 mpg (wife average) = 619 gallons consumed

What is the emission difference between the two?

really? Your gonna make me answer this? Your question implies I care little or nothing for our planet and that I don't understand the totality of mans reckless actions. So, I won't entertain your question because it's loaded and I don't have time for nonesense.

Not really loaded, just asking for specifics. Discussion like this are so generic and general they really only go in useless circles and are as you state nonsense. I was just asking how far is too far for env regualtions, thats it. I know your not reckless from reading your other posts.

OK fine u want regulation then have it but don't pick and chose who and what is regulated across the board us the only fair way . and not just crippling USA regulations if u are going to totally screw the economy it has to be world wide. As fat as led paint I say make it if your kid is chewing on window ledges he will be useless to society any way

lol, that is funny but obviously you know all young kids chew on stuff, whether it be window ledges, toys, etc which were all loaded with lead. Im pretty sure we all did when we were young ;)

Whitedust, I have no clue. it was a serious question / more of a food for thought kind of statement.

jebjk1, that is probably straight up burn test correct? now if we add in a DEF system...... then what?

Diesel exhaust contributes 15 times more than gas emissions per liter of fuel burned.
So... burning diesel is way worse for the planet.
like I said then ban all the light duty diesel trucks, all the heavy duty straight trucks and vans, big rigs, the trains, the boats, the ships, the tanks. all the farm equipment . last but not least ban the groomers yes I said it ban those evil dirty groomers .get a grip people it is a small car getting better than 40mpg . not even a dent. I would bet just the snow groomers in the usa produce more emissions than all the tdi in the world

The obvious is the diesel emmitts more nasties to the environment since VW does not meet EPA standards.

I would like to correct the Cetane rating stated earlier in the post. Cetane ratings for " on road and off road diesel fuel has been above 40 cetane for many years, 1970's. Current Cetane ratings for premium #2 USDF is 46 or higher. Regular #2 ULSF is at no less than 44. I buy from 2 suppliers. A member Coop, and a independent jobber. All of my fuel delivered on road or off road is at 46 minimum. I hope this will clarify the "dirty diesel gas".
