Ford truck motor size and extended warranty questions

Ok it is slow on the form and I am looking for some info so I'll ask for opinions/and past experience (yes I know this can open a can of worms but what the heck this time of year we can all use some good reading).

I have always been a Chevy guy (never owned anything else) but I am really taking a long hard look at the Ford F150

I am currently driving a 4 door Silverado with a V8 I believe the 5.3 motor. It is my daily driver to work and taking the kids everywhere, pull a two place enclosed trailer now possibly upgrade to a small inline 2-4 years down the road all local trips around the Midwest. Usually keep our vehicles 8-10 years. In the past I have purchased the GMPP extended warranty (basically the original manufacture warranty extended) but not until right before the manufacture warranty expires. This way you get more time and miles (yes you pay a bit more). GMPP you select the amount of additional miles and if you want to pay a deductible or not when you bring the vehicle in and that it for their extended warranty.

Thoughts on the different V6 motor options in the F150 (still odd for me to think of a V6 in a truck and then pull a trailer and still be able to pass when need to)? Good the bad the ugly?

Who has purchased the Ford protect warranty? What level did you go with and why? Any problems or concerns? looks like you can also purchase this up until the original warranty expires.

thanks

I was in the same boat 5 years ago. I always had a GM vehicle but then in September of 2013 I bought a new Ford F150 XLT with the 3.5 V6 Ecoboost engine. Have never looked back. My Dad bought the same truck 2 days before I did as well. We take turns pulling our NEO 24' enclosed trailer to the UP & back. Pulls it like a dream. Heck, it has more get up & go than the majority of the V8's on the market. I am 67K miles right now & no issues. I did not buy an extended warranty. Gas mileage averages around 17 - 18 mpg for mixed conditions. You can get 20+ on the highway if you drive it a little over the speed limit which I do not. At the time of the purchase Ford had like $10K in rebates so the truck was actually cheaper than some used ones I saw for sale. You are entering a good time for rebates.

I have had a 14, 15, 16 Silverado Z-71 Crew with 5.3 and got fed up with the bouncy front suspension and sad sack 5.3 with AFM that made the engine a chore to drive (loved the interior and looks though, especially the 16 with LED front end). I then leased 17 Ram Crew Express with Hemi and rear coil suspension and loved both (I would not buy a Ram though due to electrical gremlins, lease only).
Two months ago I leased a 18 F-150 Crew STX with 2.7 Twin turbo (on TV in ads every five minutes) and like many things about that truck..especially the motor and 10 speed auto transmission (co-engineered with GM), AND ALL ALUMINUM BODY.. the truck is slick.
My suggestion, you can lease this truck with no money down for 24 months (really 23 months as the first month is already paid) for $335 per month and get 21,000 total miles. No risk as it is under warranty the entire time, if you like it great..if not it goes back.

Warning..this truck gets great MPG without a trailer (21 city/mixed and 25 MPG 70 MPH highway) BUT, is worse than a V-8 pulling a 5,000 travel trailer (get 10 MPG with Hemi and get 8.5 with Ford).
I would try it, the acceleration with the 2.7 Turbo is nice as to get it to move you are in low RPM range and the reduction in NVH makes it seem like driving a Lexus.
One last FYI, the Ram HAS THE BEST SUSPENSION with the coil springs hands down.

I also run the 3.5 eco boost, its second to none. Combine that engine with Fords interior cab room and its an awesome truck. I was always a V-8 person and really wanted the 5.0, but after driving the eco boost Ill never go back. I have 33X12.50X20 on it and get somewhere around 16-17 mpg, hauling 4 sleds to the UP from an hour south of Springfield Illinois around 75mph, and get around 12mpg. My work truck has the 2.7 eco boost and it runs like a scrappy 4cylinder on meth, around 26mpg highway. so far there has been nothing negative for me....

I was recently shopping for a new F150 and I test drove both the 3.5 Eco and the 5.0. The ECO had tremendous pick up and was fun to drive. I ended up buying a used 2016 but I just couldn't find one in the configuration I wanted so I ended up with the 5.0. Very happy with that motor also. Just ran it about 3500 miles out east (NY, NH, VT) on vacation and running upper 70's all the time I averaged 19.6 with it. Haven't towed my 4 place with it yet but towing my car hauler with the 8N on it I get 15+.
On another note is last weekend we had my brother and sister in law in the truck with us (they drive a Chevy Crew cab) and they couldn't believe how much more rear leg room my truck had.

I bought a new 2013 screw 3.5. Still cant get over how well it pulls. Have a 4 place enclosed and pull a 26 ft travel trailer some in the summer. Just got back from the ozarks and got a little over 16 round trip. ive never gotten 10 pulling a bigger trailer. The truck has 4 10 gears which hinders the mpgs, but is pretty quick for a truck.

I was a diehard chevy guy also, made the switch a year and a half ago to an 11 F150 with the 3.5 ecoboost. I towed my 23' stealth trailer with it a few times this weekend and it towed it awesome with little to no downshifting. The truck was so much fun to drive it made me want to get an even newer one. I just got a 15 f150 lariat a couple months ago and couldnt be happier. 20180625_173814.jpg

I have 2016 Ford Xlt with the 2.7 have about 40k on it now have not had any issues but with Ford plastics. Tail lights both broke and the touch pad did also. The tabs broke Ford does not warranty like Gm would. I do like the the truck summer driving will average about 22-23 mpg. It does not like the cold mileage really drops but usually just tow a 2 place enclosed and one in the bed. Thats usually about 12 mpg. The interior does seem a lot more roomy then a Gm truck.

my 12 f150 5.0 has been mechanically good 130k 2 of those heat blower relays 1 goofy snap together radiator hose deal that is it . but the POS is totally rusted out bumpers more rust than paint . and both rear fenders have full cancer the fist tailgate literally came un glued and crushed about 4 inches .
I have never seen close to the MPG some guys say .I get 13 14 day to day and 7.9 pulling . I do have a heavy foot and would never buy a used truck from me lol .
I will prob buy the alloy with a eco even though I have always liked the rams interior for working out of the fords never have to well though out nooks and cranny s

I agree with most of the comments about the Ford. I drive a Chevy 2500hd that I’m putting up for sale soon and also looking to purchase a Ford F-150 lariat. Last March we took my neighbors 2018 Ford with the 3.5 eco boost to the UP (I drove it both ways) after that trip I was sold. I could not believe the power it had to pass and how well it did on gas pulling my 7x23 enclosed trailer with 4 sleds. He also has the 36 gallon tank which was awesome as well. The leg room in the backseat is incredible as well. The last Ford I owned was a 99, I’m excited to get back in one.

I'll agree with everyone else. Love my '12 Ecoboost for towing!
My warranty is up so my start looking come spring. Wouldn't mind a crew cab but not sure I'd like the smaller bed though.

I have a 2014 Ford Raptor with the 6.2. It now has just over 40,000 trouble free miles. I just bought a 2018 Ford F-150 Shelby and it's amazing. 5.0 Coyote engine with Whipple supercharger making 755HP! Smooth as silk and I've gotten just over 18 mpg on the highway with it and it only has 4,400 miles on it so I think it will get better. Obviously I didn't buy it for the mileage but it's a added bonus! It's one of 500 built and what a blast to drive!

I got the 6 1/2 ft bed on my supercrew this time. Had the 5 1/2 ft bed on my last two and I like the longer bed a lot better. Makes for some more challenges when parking but I'm getting used to it.

If you think having a v6 in a truck is silly, you haven't seen the new 4 cyl silverado. Honestly don't think there is a reason why you need a v8 with the amount of power that the smaller engines make. Yeah they don't sound like they have balls, but they make more hp, torque and are lighter (better mpg). The only verdict I have on them is the turbo longevity, and I am not talking the guy who put 100k highway miles on in only 2 years. 5.0 is a damn near bulletproof engine due to its simplicity.

Had to return the harassment you gave on my shack... LOL. Funny story. The spot we have breakfast on sunday mornings I stopped to take a picture of the stupid ricer with the big wing. Didn't even notice the truck sitting next to it was the Shelby version until I sent to one of my buds who loves fords. IMG_20180324_091637466_HDR.jpg IMG_20180324_091649546_HDR.jpg Nice truck. That Coyote motor is really a beast!!
