the 500s were a great machine, pretty much a square engine and very dependable. have seen some primary clutches on trail ridden 500s go for 8-10 miles because of the node of that motor !

I'm hoping so, just hope that cleaning the powervalves and new springs will get rid of the ticking noise. If not I'm onto the clutch. I already got a clutch puller for it, once the snow is 100% away, the clutch is coming off to clean and inspect.

Stuff is on it's way. Looked for some mods for you but came up with zilch for clutching. Most AM mods were on the 600 & 700 XC's. For what it's worth, HCS has a decent XC forum and picked up a word of mouth on " Snowmobile Fanatics " or something like that has a huge XC forum. When I looked I couldn't verify since I didn't want to join. Might be some good places for tech data.

this is a good thread. that 500 should last a long time.

I have a 2001 XC 500 (no valves) with 9,700 miles that i haven't done a thing to, I mean not a thing. It's still on the original spark plugs, haven't touched the clutch, haven't even changed the chain case oil. The pull start rope broke on the last ride of the year and sucked back up into the recoil. She started off the primary just fine for the last 4 days.

i owe it all to Amsoil Interceptor. I don't have power valves, I know. But hot dang that is some great oil.

Indy-you're gonna love that sled. I have an 05 XC SP as well, only difference is mines the 700 and is white and red. As far as mirrors go, I have the hood mounted Polaris mirrors. I can't believe I went as long as I did w/out mirrors. So nice just being able to glance down, see that headlight, and you know you're good to keep rolling. My 99' 700 was a great sled, and I hated to see that go. The 05' is everything that sled was performance wise, with a much better ride. Enjoy, and happy b-day a few days early.

You haven't changed the plugs or the chain case oil in 11 years/10,000 miles? I wouldn't believe you if I saw it.

I've read on other sites that they can make the noise i'm hearing. If not, then It's probably the clutch. Comp is good, pistons look great, not a big deal. I'm positive i'll get er before next season.

It does the little noise even when I don't move the sled, when it's revving down which made me think powervalves because the clutch never engaged. When it idles, it make sno noise. I read it's compression release and that it can be caused from dirty and/or bad springs in the powervalves. We'll wait and see, hurry up dang powervalve spring!!!

2900 miles on current sled, valves look good. Amsoil does work. Wintertime and I tried to blow sleds up today, no luck. I have racked up very large numbers on sled odometers (poos) no clutch issues. I suspect Poo bashers are simply jealous.

we have an 02 500 XCSP and havent done a thing to it since we got it.

a cheap and easy mod for the 500s is to change the weights from 54g to 56g

message a guy names pockets on hardcoresledder for some mods for a 500 XCSP and he will get you where you need to go.

Hey Indy, I have a clutch kit off an 02 600. Not sure if it will work not. But it has the weights, spring, and helix. All adjustable. I believe the weights are 10-60. Let me know if your interested.

stock 500 weights are 56 grams, stock 600 weights are 58, I think the 60 is just a tad too high. Thanks for the offer.

Did you get enough to ride on Indy?

yup! 4-5" melting as we speak LOL! Hopefully I can make it to a buddy's hunting land this weekend to go for a bigger ride before it all melts! (please acatzl550, tomorrow is my birthday :D ) It still makes the ticking sound, it's not as bad when it's warmed up. And only makes about 2-3 when coming to a stop now. It IS the powervalves. It does make the noise if I rev it up to 3k rpm and let the rpms drop instantly without engaging the clutch. I put my hand over the head while it made the noise and didn't feel any "thumping" then i put it over the powervalve cover and could feel the "thump thump thump" So, the new springs didn't solve it. The bellows have no tears. They ARE clean now. I heard I may have to turn the idle up because the rpms are dropping too much from 4k to 1.5k and causing the powervalves to chatter. Not too concerned, she drove really nice! Darts a tad more than my 700, I need to tighten up the front limiter strap badly. I can't get the belt off, I need the team industries belt removal tool. I'm loving the double handlebar hook, thanks again MJK! Can't wait to put the 400's in there instead of the 410's. I'm sure it won't make a HUGE difference, but the plugs are BLACK! I think it may need new needle and seats, after I let it sit for 15 min. and went to start it up, I had to hold the throttle to get it to start. It's a little bit tippier than my gen II, but the rear suspension is AHHHMAZING! I didn't feel a thing, i hopped onto my 700 and it felt like riding a haywagon. I felt like I was riding a 4-stroke the thing is so dang quiet! I may just have to get an slp can ;)
