I have a relative that works at a Chevy dealer. (He has access to all brands, however). He called me today and it sounds like they are doing everything they can to get rid of the current stock of 2013 Silverados.

Just trying to say not to be too loyal to any particular truck. Let's face it, they are all built pretty darn good now. Shop around and don't rule any model out.

Thanks for the input, I have not ruled out the F150 yet, but Ford is going to have to do allot better on the price. When I build two as close as I can between brands Ford is almost $5000 more. I'm checking with my Ford dealer tomorrow to make sure he found all the deals he could.

Well after lots of comments on the Air-ride I'm thinking that is not a good option.

I definitely have it down to Ford or Dodge. I have a 07 GMC Acadia and I do like it, but it has had its share of problems.

I keep you up dated on what I end up with. Till then keep the opinions coming. Thanks!

but Honda is not pretending to be a American truck.
and I guess I could sell a truck cheaper if I did not take 80billion bucks from the tax payer then not pay back my debts to my suppliers.
oh sorry they split 80 billion and to be fair fiat did pay back a whooping 7.8 billion so now they are off the hook for any future pay back.
Yeah I could get behind that big banana to the US tax payer and feel proud about driving it down the road

It is hard to argue with sales figures though. I was reading an article over the weekend on the top selling vehicles last year, and the F150 was the #1 selling vehicle, car or truck, for the 31st year in a row and 36th year in a row for trucks only. They sold 645,000 F150's last year and the top selling car, the Camry, only sold 405,000 units. That's 240,000 more F150's sold than Camry's last year! Those sales figures, and 36 years in a row, are just amazing. They went on to say the Silverado and Ram were far behind in 2nd and 3rd but did not give their unit sales.

My buddy wanted to buy a new truck last year. He looked at the parts list for toyota, ram, and chevy. he went with the toyota, because it had an overwhelming number of parts made in the U.S. compared to the other 2. He said there was no way he would buy a ford... i don't know why.

i'm also looking at buying a new truck within the next year. so this thread is pretty interesting for me as well. some thoughts of what i will be getting

3.73 gears. I have 3.42 now in 2003 silverado. I pull a 3,500 lb boat and a two place snowmobile trailer. I cannot stand how frequently it shifts, it will shift on flat ground against a stiff wind.

the crew cab ford is significantly superior to the silverado 4 door. i have friends with each. don't know much about the toyota though. i hear it's huge, but don't konw if i could buy a toyota.

back up camera is great for hooking up the trailer. i pull a trailer every weekend in the summer, man it is slick if you have it.

i am thinking the torque from the ecoboots maybe the selling point for me. i do quite a bit of pulling and need the big cab to fit people.

additionaly, i djust don't like the look of the silverados and toyotas as compared to the f150. it the picture above is a 2014 silverado, it looks better.

Its your money buy which ever one you like. I have had both Dodge and Ford and both have been good vehicles.
I am sure you would be happy with both. Currently have 2 Hemi's, a truck and Jeep Commander and can say the Hemi likes to pull. It for sure won't shift constantly like the GM trucks do. I can tow what I want, always tow in overdrive and it will only shift on the steeper hills. One thing to think about with the Turbo Ford is if you do tow heavy loads much you will replace the Turbo's at some point, the heat will eventually kill them.

wow! i am still running my '99 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 with the 5.3 and has 400,000+ miles and is still going strong. was never babied a day in its life. rather, it was beaten like a government mule! how many half tons do you know that have pulled 20,000 pound chopper box wagons up and down hills all summer and fall for most of the trucks life? driven thru the Teton Pass in Wyoming twice with a 7,000 pound homemade car hauler with 6 sleds on it, hauled 6,000 pound loads of fertizer (at one time) in the bed from town to the farm every spring every year, hauled a full bed of manure to people's homes several times, i've hauled a bed load AND trailer load of pea gravel at the same time half way across the state, loaded countless loads of firewood on it, driven it thru the trees in the woods, thru soil erroded swamps at a speed probably faster than i should have chasing after cows that got out of the fence, trips up to the UP every weekend the trails were open from the years 2001 to 2006, and pulls the camper to Tomah,WI every summer for the big truck and tractor pulls. after the solid performance i have received from this vehicle, it is going to be next to impossible to look at a different brand for my next truck purchase! I have been told I have been very lucky.

I just went through the Ford/Dodge/GM decision process back in October and can share a few observations.

Be sure to try a few evasive maneuvers at close to highway speed during your test drive, I found that most of the Fords (Platinum, Limited) were too "tippy" for my driving, the FX4 was acceptable, The Dodge Sport was the same as the Laramie and Longhorn which were better than the FX4, The GMC Sierra All-terrain handled the best but rode the worst.

Ford has best load capacity for the class I was looking at, but I tow more than I haul.

The ECO boost is good but Ford only has a 5 year 60,000 mile powertrain warranty, I would get a 5.0 because of that. Ram and GM have a 5 year 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. The 5.3 is adequate for most driving and gets pretty good mileage on a level highway. The Ram Hemi is fun but thirsty, if looking for mileage get a 2013 V6 with the 8 speed.

Current GMs are dated inside (updated for 2014), Ford and Ram both good with SYNC and UConnect but if you are not getting navigation, uconnect, etc then not as much of an issue.

I ended up with a 2012 Ram 1500 4 x 4 Laramie Crewcab, 3.92 gears, the Hemi and lots of extras to replace a 2007 Avalanche LTZ, a big factor was price, the Sierra Crewcab Z71 was cheapest but too much like the Avalanche it was replacing, the Ford CrewCab FX4 was close to $4k higher ($3K sticker) than the Ram all of them with the same options (uplevel sound, navigation, leather, htd/cooled seats, upgraded wheel/tires, sunroof, posi, larger gas tank, tow package, back-up camera).

If I could have got a Ford dealer to deal, I may have ended up with the Ford as I liked it as much as the Ram.

In 2010 I was talking to a dealer looking to purchase new truck. The dealer ship had access to Dodge,Ford, Chevy. I told the salesman I wanted to test drive each truck pulling my 6 place enclosed trailer. A few days later he delivered 3 new trucks to our house, all were 2500 Diesel, with auto trans.
Over the weekend I got a good work out hookin up the trailer to each truck and test driving each several times.
Dodge won the test drives.
Decided to keep the 05 with the 5.9 cummins and no payments
My Father in law gets GM discount, nephew gets Ford discount, but have always bought Dodge because of price.

Ford AC did NOT cool this last summer...and lost sales because of it. It is undersized when the temps get hot.

If you get the ecoboost Ford, you will be disappointed in the mileage unless you opt for the 3.5 rear end or 3.3 but will suffer when you haul...going empty most the time...get the lower of the two and get some decent mileage.

Ford makes a good truck but it isn't worth 5k more, in my opinion. Also why doesn't Ford extend their warranty? It says a lot about a company except for KIA where they heap on the "required maintenance" which is quite costly to do.

100k miles is par on warranties these days.

When you cast stones about other makes be sure to figure out where the design, engineer and test them, as that employs some too.

Trucks shifting all the time is the new norm. Ford has 6 speed trannies too. Get used to it. The more shifting the more the truck can stay in the "sweet spot" for more torque and better gas mileage.

Chrysler's ownership is of little importance as long as they do their building and design in the USA...who holds the purse strings won't effect anything or anybody.

GM builds great trucks too and are on a par with any others regardless of whether you hold them liable for the bail out and while Ford did not take money (they were in "trouble BEFORE both GM and Chrysler...so they got lines of credit only months before the big melt down of credit) Ford sat at the same table as the other two companies and was ready to accept money if their own lines of credit were used up. Nobody knew just how deep and long the "we aren't lending money to anyone" process was going to last from the banks. I believe when you add GMC and Chevy the sales numbers are close to or rivals FORD. 5.3 engine is a good one if a bit under powered and has had a pretty stellar record.

Toyota trucks are heavy and far behind the major 3 in technology...they last a long time tho so they hold value well.

Technology on ALL vehicles are changing rapidly and today's truck will be obsolete far faster than ever before as more power and better fuel mileage is driving the market. Ask yourself this; if you could get 32 miles per gallon on a full size pickup truck and still pull 10k with it, would that motivate you to trade? They are driving these concept trucks around right now! Guess how long before you see them at your favorite supermarket???

Well after a first look at the numbers I got in my email today the bottom FX4 package (with the 5.0, I don't want the Eco-boost) is $5000 more than the Ram Sport listed above with leather. I think the Ram will be winning in the end. I do want to go back a drive both. Then there is about $4000 difference between the two Ram models I built. I have been asking friends and its 50/50 even my one buddy that has had Ford, Dodge and 2 Hummers in the time I have had my F150 said hes liked them all. Honestly, as it has been said, they all build good trucks now a days. I think its hard just b/c all I have ever owned, that I drove, have been Fords. First car was a 89 Cougar, then a 94 t-bird, then my F150.

The Express is a basic but with all the main features I "need". The Sport has the extras I really like and "want". But I think the Sport will be better for resale. Plus I can get the 8 speed trany in the Sport. And I thinking that will be a good thing.

A few people have mentioned rear ends. I assume the 3.55 will be good for my needs, but I do have a choice of a 3.92. Any reason to get the 3.92 for what I pull (see first post) Also I drive 55 miles round trip to work each day.

PS

Indy
If money was not an object or I was single, I would walk in to Ford an order a Raptor right now and then stop and get either a 1200 Doo or 1100 Turbo Cat! By the way good job with the kid at school!

LVR1000
That is a nice 350SD!
