Looking to go out west

Hey Indy. I have typed up multiple responses to this post and keep deleting them because I just don't want to come across as some A** that thinks he know how to ride and want's put you in your place but! I would like to think of myself as a decent rider and I know for a fact that I can't keep up with everyone on this forum! Just because I have sidehilled below a guardrail or thrown a hop over doesn't mean I can hang. Also to think that just because this is primarily a Midwest forum you have the skills it takes to ride with these guys is kind of crazy.
My guess is that you are probably the best rider in your group with the most capable sled in your group meaning you are doing things that nobody in your group is doing???
We have never met and I have nothing against you but I would love to have join us for a ride once. Not to try to humble you (because I may not) but to? Well maybe to try to humble you if I have to be honest.

I guess what I mean is what I stated in my first response. Be fair to yourself and everybody that you plan to ride with on a trip out West. Don't start the ride with your ego! Start it with your brain. Our ego's have a tendency to get us into trouble! Depending on where you go out West it is not always tough to get around. However being able to use the terrain that sit's in front of you is the challenge. On the other hand there are riding zones that are amazing and only those with advanced skills and Ba**s the size of small planets are able to venture...
Just keep it real and have a ball. The smile on your face at the end of the day is all that really matters and not if you could hang or who you could hang with. I guess my Grief for today was "Good Grief Indy".

No offense meant Indy!
Pretty much spot on with your assumptions. I know they always have avy classes at Milwaukee snow show I'll probably check that out. Keep me posted if anyone has openings! Thanks for the replies so far lots of good info. New sled is expected to ship 9/30.

Please change this word and make sure whoever you go with has taken the class. Everyone feels invincible before they've gone out west and I guarantee you'll be singing a different tune on your first day out there.

Not sure if this is too early but I'm looking to join a group to go out west with this winter. I live in the fox valley area in WI will be riding a 15 Polaris RMK 800, I have a truck and 2 place 12' enclosed trailer. Never been out there before, I'd consider myself an average rider, would be able to keep up with anyone but I also won't be highmarking anyone.

Can reply thru here or PM me.

Thanks,

Scott

Guess its a good thing you went with the 8!

I'll take ya out and learn ya some side hilling, but I get to ride your pro. You can ride my sled.;)

Indy, chances are pretty good I, and my usual out west buds, will be heading to Tog in March, you can come along with us old guys to show us how its done. :)

Take the avy class! Get your probe, I'm sure you have a shovel, tog rents beacons, or better yet, buy your own, once you head west, it becomes kind of addicting, take the avy class! My wife might get upset with you if you saw me get hit by an avy, but you couldnt find, or dig me out. Because you had no clue on what to do.

Biggest problem I have out west, CARDIO! 10,000 feet kicks ones arse if not in shape, and once tired, mistakes get made, when mistakes get made, parts need to be replaced. Strength is one thing, stamina and endurance is another. Just ask my wife! BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

The pro will take you where you may not want to go, before you even know you dont want to be there. Huge difference between out west and da yoop my young Padawan!

I've been riding my bike 5 miles before work every day hopefully that helps with the endurance! How much to rent a beacon? If its $100 I might as well look into buying one.

If you need to use a beacon I have one for you! You have a couple great offers going here Indy! We did 10 days in Togwotee last year and the place is awesome! It has anything you want and more!

This was March this year. Nothing crazy but you will understand after you go!

Running 5 miles a day isn't even good enough for me. I still get out of breath walking up the steps in the lodge. Maybe ride your bike with a straw in your mouth.

You can come out with me. I am always looking for a young pup to help dig me out!

My last ride was Easter this past year and I just can't shake the itch! Like an addiction don't ya know! Indy knows what I mean! He is consumed with thoughts of ripping sick lines and busting through waste deep drifts! I am hoping to have a snowball fight this week if I can find snow! I will be hanging in Cooke City starting tomorrow night! Made it to Billings tonight! Just may have to take a hike to Grasshopper Glacier!

As others have said, ride with a guide at tog the 1st time out there. Best investment in snowmobiling skillz you can make. It is a whole different game but you will learn quickly what you can and cant do and have a great time.

We rented M8's out there twice and took the shorties to the snowiest, and I'd still consider myself a novice.

Altitude is tough. Make sure you drink tons of water leading up to and on your trip.

This is a great thread. I love it. Indy- Trust me, if i survived the altitude with only 3 weeks on the eliptical, you will do great. Don't expect to be running any marathons up there and NO ALCOHOL! You need to be careful and PACE YOURSELF when digging out. Don't be in a hurry like when in the UP as that will take it out of you real quick. But you are young and in good shape, so just keep it up. You will be just fine.
