Michigan removing turn ahead signs

But, with this said, isn't it true that most road ways are designed for speeds approx. 20-30mph more than what the posted speed limit will be? (A bit off topic, but since we have the ear of the engineer)

Depends on the roadway but usually up to 10 mph above. I haven't done Interstates but I heard they are higher yet, but I have no proof of it and couldn't tell you what it is.

I saw the groomer leaving the crossroads near Marquette two nights ago and last night the groomer coming out of downtown Ishpeming!!! Who gives a CRAP about the signs, I've got five days off... I'm goin riding!!!

THEY NEED TO GET THE WORD OUT if thier going to limit the signs.

The one I had in college was on paper and said six months ago.... I can't remember the exact wording but something like "six monts ugo I cudn't even spel inganeer, now I are one." I always enjoy seeing that oldie but goodie. It always gives me a chuckle. (Like I said earlier, I've heard it all. One of my profs had one like this on his wall. I think it was my hydrology/hydraulics prof.)

I designed a few bike paths that involved federal monies. I had to design the bike path for 30 mph. Really, 30 mph! When is the recreational/casual bicyclist riding their bike at 30 mph?
Those spandex lovers go by my house everyday year round cruising right along, not sure how fast but those Ricky racers on bikes haul. Bike route runs in front of my house.

I use to race criterium. The fastest I ever got my bike on level ground was 45 mph. The fastest I was ever on my bike was 55 mph down a 6% hill. Real scary at those speeds. Took real wide turns on those 700c tires. Had to use the on-coming lane. Great bike but it cost around $1,000 in the 80's. Heck my sew-up tires, rims, Campy hubs, butted laces, and special cog cost me an additional $300. I pinched the bike between my legs to keep it stable at 55 otherwise I would be on the ground.

The guy in the movie Breaking Away did go 60 mph but he had a special chainring and cog and a draft from a semi to active the speed. I heard the combination was 62/12 which is really hard for the spandex lovers to pull. Either way, the actor didn't ride that fast, it was a professional bicycle racer that did it.

I guess I'm trying to say is that the person has to be in really good shape and have the right equipment to achieve speeds of 30+ on a bicycle. (I couldn't do it today.)

Oh, and they have curve ahead signs, stop signs the whole works. Must be to save the kid with the training wheels and pink basket coming the other way?????? I am for the signs after seeing what I did yesterday without them. People are going to get hurt and it maybe someones kid who just got their safety certificate and a nice used 340 going head on with a "snowgeezer" in a corner that neither knew was there. Just saying.

I did note the new No ORV signs that went up at trail heads. that was nice since they do like the trail in the winter too! How about some "no X country skier" signs, I would hate to hit one of those, I heard they bleed green???

Actually it was on a county road and not a bike path. If I hit anything on-coming it would have been a car.

To stud or not to stud? done that? UP vs. Western riding, done that. Snow or not going to snow? check. Birthdays? yup. Adsense, covered. Brand bashing including Poo? happens, see rules. Politics or Unions, both well covered. Polls? umm? Pet pics, check. Places to stay places to eat can use a little more coverage. What you got in mind Indy?
 
XSledder - I understand that you would want a PE to sign off on all the trails ( and I am assuming you are one), but how can you or another PE justify the liability of signing off on this if the club isn't going to pay you? I always give advice on stuff with my buddies but I wouldn't ever sign anything, 1) because i'm not a PE and 2) I don't want the liability. I know this has been hashed to death nd I honestly think it has been one of the greatest discussions on here with only a few people throwing random thoughts out there.

Also - What does that book say about paths/trails through private property that are not permanenant?

These are legitimate questions I am looking for answers to. I am not trying to throw questions out there to stir the pot (disclaimer because this is the internet and words on a screen aren't the same as a face to face conversation).

I won't be the club paying the PE, it could be a larger organization like MSA or DNR. DNR and other government agencies always have consultanting engineers on-call. They can use them for that. As an officer of a club in Illinois, I understand the stresses on a club's finances. Your right to assume that a club can't afford to pay a PE for every trail, but it wasn't the clubs that did this to began with, it was the MSA. Down in Illinois a club couldn't afford the PE but the Region or IASC could afford the PE's. Just get a few PE's with an on-call contract with a rate for looking at each sign, or trail, or something like that. It would cost more than the club would want to spend but less then the larger organizations would think. Again, the clubs didn't do this, the MSA and DNR are doing it and causing the problem based on misguided logic.

I know Illinois hires trail advisors to interact with Regions and clubs throughout the State of Illinois. I'm sure Illinois could afford a few on-call consultants for a few thousand a year to review trail signage like curve ahead, bridge ahead, stop ahead, and stop signs. I would think the other states could do the same thing.

Frnash, pointed out earlier that private roads open to public travel must adhered to the MUTCD. Not hard for a lawyer to make an extension to include trails on private property open to public traffic no matter what the mode of transportation is.

This is great post. I can't help to think what the trail permits are going to cost once we have professional engineers certifying and signing off on each sign placement. If all those engineering consultants are on hand and available, maybe they can help with putting up and maintain signs instead.

Can the engineers instead design some kind of snow that doesn't melt below 50 degrees?

I love it when people bash things they don't do and don't fully understand. We get it, you don't like (us) cyclists. Obviously you feel the same about xc skiers.
