Propane prices are sky high!

Isn't the bigger problem even getting propane?
That's the way news making it sound. People in northern Wisconsin running out, businesses shutting down early to conserve cause they can't get any.
Pretty scary if ya can't get any no the matter price.

X2 exactly can't get the stuff or selling minimum amounts to get everyone thru the cold snap. Some suppliers have shut the doors due to shortage. If everyone conserves there will be more LP to sell to masses. Not real difficult concept to understand! I told my supplier I have 250 gallons I'll conserve... Yes SUCKS!!... but right thing to do for others.

Outdoor wood boiler is the best money I ever spent. After 12 years its still ticking and saving me money everyday. Heat is set at 72 and I haven't had to buy propane in a couple of years (have an LP cook stove).

X2. Plus we can burn wet wood in them. I have 15 acres (probably a few hundred cord) of potential firewood growing in my front/back yards. Not that I really want to cut a single one of them down, but nice to know there is ALWAYS backup!

Some of these replys drive me crazy. People complaining they can't afford to heat their house, then later in their post talking about heating their cabin, or shed or some other place. If you can afford to own additional property, then one would think you would have a decent "cushion" of cash in savings. Even if it costs 3000 a month for the 4 worst months of cold it should not bankrupt a person. Does it suck, YES, but suck it up and deal with it. There is nothing you can do at this point. I know 12k is a lot of cash, but most of us own a snowmobile or other toy that can offset most of that cost if it gets that tough going.

Go ahead start bashing me now, I know I am not one of the "regulars" here and my opinion does not matter since my post count is so low...

you assume you know everybody's financial situation,,right? Things change for people and often it's unforeseen. A declining economy, a medical emergency, a loss of a job, etc,,, can contribute to financial instability. For you to be annoyed or say suck it up is a ignorant thing to say. I know a guy who owns 6 rental properties and all run on propane. We have bookings and when propane more than doubles in a few days it is disaster. Fuel prices, garbage disposal, snow removal and food has all risen and now propane doubles. The problem with your thinking is that it is narrow. i understand your point and you are correct for a narrow margin of people but for many here in the UP where the household income is way below city folk, this spike will hurt. I encourage you to look at it in a more broader sense and than you may see what many experience.

I sign a contract every fall with my gas company. I'm capped at $1.69 a gallon thru April. Just turned my heat up to 72! Not sure why others don't do the same? Why on earth would you be with a company that didn't do contracts is beyond me? And if you own a second home or cabin and cant afford to heat it than you cant afford to own a second home or cabin.

Many people use propane as a secondary heat source and use smaller amounts and do not want to have a butt load of money sitting in a tank when they have a lower income to begin with. For us to get a contract we have to be on a "keep full" program. Getting over the hump of filling the tank can be difficult especially when you have a 1000 gallon tank and can dump in 850 gallons costing over 2 grand. As prices of everything increase it does make it harder to own secondary properties but to say we shouldn't own them is pushing it.

Being concerned or complaining about propane more than doubling in price is reasonable. i am glad you are fortunate enough for it to not be a problem but don't fool your self because most my adult life I was fortunate enough to do anything I wanted and didn't worry about this sort of thing but life changes and I hope you don't experience hardship.

All about supply and demand - The demand is there , the supply is not , like others have stated

I would love to read the comments when gasoline reaches $5.00 a gallon during the winter months for just 87 octane , $6.00 for 91 octane , where it effects EVERYONE who loves this sport

My in laws have a pellet stove. The tops aren't hot enough to burn. It might get warm, but not instantly. If by chance the pet was up there and it kicked on and started to get warm, the pet would/should jump off. Sometimes/most times, animals have more common sense than most humans.

I actually love the heat from their pellet stove. You can really get the place cooking with one. But I am spoiled, I live in country with natural gas. Put an air filter in every few months and done. I grew up with my parents having an indoor woodburner. PIA cutting splitting and moving wood, but they had propane. I guess I never realized how expensive propane is. If I was on propane I would already have a pellet or wood burner.

This is not a good thing for the economy in our area (Hayward, WI) I called Rep. Sean Duffy to let him know that something needs to be done. Not sure it does any good, but it couldn't hurt. Call Rep. Duffy toll free (855) 585-4251 and let him know you are not happy

I have 2 pellet stoves, one in my primary residency and the other in the rental. My primary is 1350 sq ft and a 2 story, so it's tall with a small footprint. I could barely heat it effectively on the really cold days but I bought the stove from a smaller place so I knew it would struggle to keep up on the really cold days but none the less I would burn a 40 lb bag a day at $4.50 a bag totaling $140 a month which is reasonable but than there is some electric you would need to add which may be $15-20 a month.

Just a few days ago I took the pellet stove out and put the wood stove back in and will not go back from here. Wood is always warm and cheapest fuel to heat with but it's not for everyone.

propane here is $5.80 as of last Thursday, not sure if it changed today.

Twin Cities news tonite said the governor had declared a state of emergency for the propane shortage. Not real sure what that will do for the folks that need it though.

I read that the state of MI suspended the hours of service limits for truckers hauling propane. May be of little help, but there are things that can be done. Since a major propane pipeline has been shut down, alternate forms of transportation must be used. Government could ease restrictions and put priority status on barge and rail traffic. Taxes on propane could be temp. suspended. Attorney General could investigate possible price rigging/contract violations. Squeaky wheel gets the grease. Complaining in this forum won't change a thing, call/write/e-mail your congressmen/governor. It won't cost you a penny but might help save one?

If this cold spell doesn't end soon I will have to let my Garage go cold. The Wood Pile is looking smaller than I have seen it in years and I should have had plenty of dry Wood to last until April. Now I will have to burn November cut Wood or turn on the Natural Gas Furnace around 3/1.

I wonder what will happen to the Gas price when everyone like myself that heats with Wood, runs out and goes back to Gas to finish out the Winter. So far this winter I have used about 30% more Wood than a normal year.

THINK OF THE RESORTS, RESTRAUNTS, bars , this was not projected in their prices,AND PEOPLE ON FIXED INCOMES,supply and demand, yeah right, we need to demand "change"

These are exactly the people I've been thinking of lately. How long can you eat the increased cost of heating before you have to pass it on to the consumer/patron. Motels have different rates for holidays/weekends/weekdays, etc. I would think the rest of you resort/bar/restaraunt owners will have to do something similar to compensate for your increased heating expense.

I suppose there is a fine line between losing customers because of increasing your prices and eating your expenses and trying to stay in business.

Good Luck To You All!
