SR Viper has Gremlins

Arctic Cat did not deliver on their promise to Yamaha...and Yamaha should have known better. Cat quality is at the bottom of the list because of the culture at Cat - a culture of poor quality cannot be changed in a year or with force from Yamaha. This Viper is mostly all Cat..Cat designed chassis, Cat tuned the EFI, Cat tuned the suspension, and Cat sourced and assembled the sleds, and Cat is carrying the warranty reserve...Yamaha did make some changes...but very few. Cat has poor quality control...

Honestly what did everyone expect? Don't see this relationship lasting much longer...

Nailed it!! Not sure why anyone would want a low-quality A/C with a great motor? Without the A/C contribution I might give it a look...might being the operative. But not at 12 G's - these guys are totally crazy.
There was too much hype with this sled and it didn't have a chance to live up to it. And Yam certainly didn't want to hear any negatives prior to the season...guys got kicked off TY for voicing negatives about it.
And this argument about "gas and go"? I started thinking about that one day after another $150 oil change receipt, and it occurred to me you can buy about 4 gallons of VES Gold for that price and ride for about 8-9 years at my average MPY. LOL (yeah it is seriously laughable)

Yeah because you can DO IT YOURSELF halfw$! - most can't. 90% take their Yam's in for oil changes. Try finding a dealer to do it for $40 -in YOUR dreams dude. I'm not a mechanic but I could do it if I wanted to spend 3 hrs and get my BP sky high.

I find it ironic that your talking about A/C supposed low quality when your handle is the same name as one of the worst Poo's. (That's because I consider the Cutlass to be the worst Poo ever made.)

xsledder,

it is not a hard sled to maintenance. I guess you may hate it the first time but it really isn't bad at all. Much easier than the Phazer and the oil filter is very easy to get to. Hope this helped answer you questions.

Thanks Kip...I'm more interested in how to change the chaincase lube. I was told by Mr. Sled of TY that you have to take the reverse off to fill the chaincase. Is this true?

I go thru this a couple time a year....bought one from G&G Powersports in Muskego, and cancelled it before I took delivery when I heard all the negative press about the sled. I had the benefit of buying a one year old non-current, so I read all the press. I have the receipt and cancellation to prove it. Ended up with an '05 XC 600 - white, instead. And I only name the dealer because they are out of business, but they were a great dealer that allowed me to cancel without any questions.

Kip - I'm not going to get into a debate with you but there's lots of Yam owners who would vehemently disagree with your statement about how well Yam stands behind their sleds. Handwarmer issues year after year, broken suspension parts year after year, the list goes on. They did NOTHING for those owners.

They do change your oil for around $40. They also charge you the $70 or so an hour labor to do it. Just like any other service. I have a friend that cant even change his slides and then complains about the cost to have someone do it. Basic service has always been a necessity for me. Allows me to look the machine over good for problems.

2011 Apex XTX, 2000 fun miles, never put a wrench on it yet. I've ready guys on totallyamaha with same report but 10k miles. Bought 5 year warranty for $299. How can you go wrong with yamaha? When my 5 year warranty is up I'll order another new one.

As far as Yamaha taking care of their customers, I can only comment on my experience. I had cracked Y pipes on my Apex and Yamaha replaced the Y pipes and exhaust donuts to the tune of about $900.00. Was covered as well as my RA dial adjust cable that was ripped off by ice. This would have been considered wear and tear items to other manufacturers. They warranty and cover about everything. Even gave me all new bogey wheels and new updated handled bars for better heat. Ive owned units from all 4 companies and Yamaha has been ( in my experience) hands down the best. They look to afford coverage, not deny it. Ive also had better experience with Yamaha dealers in general. In my 25 years of riding,on several different units, this has been my experience. Although a distant 2nd IMO, Cat has taken care of some issues I had on a couple different ZRT 800's back in the day.

Another 4 stroke hater....(smh)...ride what you like...but I'd take a low quality cat anyday over a polaris....I think the Viper is sweet...good move by both companies..function over form...for a first year model...it has a few bugs...no big deal....I guess you don't remember the 1st year Rush???....BTW TY is a fan site...it's not endorsed or run by yamaha...again FAN SITE...and a damn good one...the advice they give there is awesome...polaris has nothing like it (neither does cat...yeah cat chat...but they don't answer questions like totally yamaha does)....and yeah I can see why they'd kick a guy like you off...you are a hater troll (admit it...you been trolling over there)....lol

wheels...and hand warmers?? yeah that was annoying...but not catastrophic....I bought new wheels and put them in..added yamaheater hand warmers...problem solved....the front W arm was weak the first couple seasons on the vector's and apexes...they beefed it up in later seasons...Should we talk about ski-doo??? My 03 rev...pistons and rings...or my 99 HO with the bad stator (that BOMBI told me to get bent over..this on a sled with 500 miles on it)??...They all have their little issues.

Where did I mention or imply "catastrophic"? Yamaha turned their backs to their customers on problems that the sleds have had for years and they lost customers because of it. Whether Kip or any other dealer got Yamaha to cover it or ate the cost themselves is not related to my point.

groomerdriver,

Yes those issues were annoying for sure. The suspension components that did break were a covered item. All in all the warmer issues were a let down for sure, however, they do a fine job for the most part of standing behind their product, certainly much better than the competition, I guess that was my point or at least that's how I meant it to be.

I just saw lots of examples where Yam didn't cover a dime. It's all good kip!

Well...I think it is relavent...a good dealer can solve a lot of little issues, and change your prespective on a brand...I have used yamaha warranty twice in the past 20 years...they always came through for me...I find the "issues" you brought to be small...I had engine issues with my ski-doos...they covered one...and refused the other...they lost me as a customer over it. IMO wheels and hand warmers...are small issues..compared to engine issues. I have never gotten mad, and quit riding brand "A" because of wheel or handwarmer issues...engine issues..not taken care of...YEP!! I think cat is good too...3 of myn buddies bought 03 firecats when they came out...2 of them blew up at least twice...and cat covered em...both times.

All our 03 revs were covered multiple times. Almost every grass drag we went to we would need new rings after the race, and everytime doo supplied them. Ended up putting wisecos for trail riding to avoid having to change them. Tomahawk sports center in tomahawk is as quality of dealer as there is out there for doo and is prolly the difference in covered or not. We have never had doo leave us like some mentioned. My bros 05 mach, crank went out on lake our cabin is on, totally replaced engine for 0 dollars out of warranty. We ride with a good 15-20+ people in group, i cannot remember the last time someone was towed, back in 90's. All doo's. Preventetive maintance, warming up sleds thoroughly, proper jetting for carbed sleds go a long ways.
