Tick Paralysis - Sad day

Well my one and a half yr old yellow lab stopped eating friday. Then became weak sat and today couldn't walk. Took her in and she has tick paralysis. They are keeping her for a couple of days and we hope to see some sort of improvement in the morning. I tell ya I'm worried about this dog as she is normally full of energy and go go go. I couldn't even get her to lift her head. We made an emergency call this a.m. to the vet and they said try a few things and we did to no avial. Then they said to bring her in if it gets worse, so I brought her in. She had a temp just above 105 degrees and a rapid heartbeat. Well I saw her fall over just trying to take a few steps, her hind legs are paralyzed. We hope to see some marked improvement in the morning. The vet just called and she has been there since 1pm and the fever has come down to 103 but absolutely no improvement in the paralysis yet. If there is no improvement in the next 12 hrs we may have some difficult decisions to make.

Has anyone had any experience with this?? If so any info provided would be great. I understand this isn't a very common thing.

Thanks,
m8man

We've had 2 of our hunter guests bird dogs end up with this, in probably just as bad of shape, it was very scary, they ended up at Deepwoods Vet here in Bruce and he knew right away what it was, within 2 days the dogs were doing so much better. The dogs both recovered very well, they were on meds for at least 30 days I think. I've got my fingers crossed and prayers said the same goes for your dog m8man
Hope this helps some

Keep posituve thought

Just remember, with good vet care, which sounds like you got right on it, recovery is in your favor. This is a something that it didn't matter if she had Frontline or the Lyme shot, nothing is 100%. Please update us. I, Skye, Danny Boy have our paws crossed.

Thanks a ton, I'll be waiting for the vet to call in the a.m.

I hope this dog pulls through. About 3 yrs ago I lost a chocolate lab to an accident, I was hoping I wouldn't have to explain another round of losing a dog to my two boys. If all goes well hopefully we'll see some movement in the right direction very soon.

Her temp is down, good sign. She has been thru alot of stress, so don't expect her to bounce right back. Hope you have a good vet, he will understand. Our paws are still crossed 4 you

Man, that sounds horrible. This is the first time I had even heard the term, but it sounds like a pretty drastic sickness for a young dog. I hope for the best. It is tough to make any decisions about a sick pet.

Temp is back up. The vet thinks maybe some sort of weird spinal infection, as with tick paralysis we should have seen some sort of rebound. They are pushing iv antibiodics and we are waiting to see. We need some positive moves in the next 24 hrs or permanent spinal cord damage can occur.

yucky stuff.

thanks all,

Is it possible she had more than one tick and they only found the obvious one. Check every nook and cranny as she may still have the culprit on her. Dont be afraid to call another vet for opinions as well. I hope all works out for you and yours.

get well

Our dog had the same thing last year the vet thought he had a spinal stroke, but it ended up being lymes put him on antibiotics and he was good. Sometimes it seems like his rear end is still messed up though, we will be praying for your pup

3rd day of antibiodics and no change. The vet is now wondering if the dog was bit by something and has a viral central nervous system problem. She has now turned aggressive. I was hoping for some sort of positive move. I have two very inquisitive young boys, 9 and 3, they are sad as all heck.

Vet says if no change today to put her down tomorrow.

yuck
