OK, probably a stupid question...... but here goes;
Is it worth it to head out to the Snowy's , probably stay at the Albany Lodge, if you're going to strictly trail ride?

I've got a '16 1200 4-tec Renegade 136 & I doubt it'd be very good off trail. Also, would I need to do anything to it, clutching, etc.. or could I just go & ride?
Never ridden out there & really thinking about going there, or the Black Hills.

We've had fun riding trail sleds out there. Had a 600 and it benefited from clutching. With yours being a 4 stroke, you might have enough torque that it works ok. I'm sure you could ride it as is but unless Doo's are hard to clutch, you might as well do it. We changed our weights in the parking lot on Poos and Cats.

We had a good time riding the trail sleds off trail too. Can't get into the same stuff but still fun. Not sure how much different it would be with the extra weight of a 4 stroke.

Trails were good out there. You aren't going to be railing corner to corner but a lot to look at.

Thanks for the replies. I believe my sled does have the TRA clutch, I'll have to look & see if how hard is is to adjust.
Appreciate all the feedback. I think we're going to hit either the Black Hills or the Snowy's sometime in Feb.

The snowies have received 3.5 feet of snow up top in the last 3 days, completely unexpected, with a quite large storm rolling in Friday/Saturday with shots of snow all next week! Looking real good out there

What does everyone mean by the "snowies" what area is that? Don't do much riding out west except for a trip to West Yellowstone every year.

Snowies would be riding out of centennial wyoming. I've been there and togwotee. I would go back to tog before snowies. But we had to trailer every day at the snowies so that was a negative.

I’m the opposite. I’ve been to Tog 3 times and will never go back. There is zero good tree riding that I can find. Snowies has a little bit of everything to offer and the small size of the mountain range makes me feel comfortable while exploring.

Its been a few years but we stayed at Wycolo on the southern edge of the snowies. It was great as we stayed on the mountain, they had a bar/grill, and gas. They tend to close here and there though and I believe they have closed for the rest of this year. When they are open, its a great area to trail ride from, you can get to Albany fairly easily, and you can get to most of the other places. We made it to ten mile from there as well as other spots. We were not off trail much as we were riding our 600s from home but the view was well worth the trip.

Tog is huge. Most dont make it very far from TML. Thats why TML isn't the place to stay.

TML is not a great place to stay, but there is certainly lots of good riding in the area. You didn't look hard enough. The area near the lodge gets really tracked up, so you need to get further away.

O.P. Do you have radios? You're going to want them.

I’ve been as far as 20+ miles away from the lodge and not much luck. Even rode with lefty for a week and begged for tight steep tree riding and everything he brought me to wasn’t what I had hoped. I’m definitely not the only person I’ve talked to who feels the same way.

Well if you ever decide to go back, let me know. I will give you a steep tight tree'd area. If the snow is good, you are going want a turbo.....
This place has some traffic nearby, but very little to none on the hill. They all go the opposite way.

Its not near TML at all. But its very easy to get to.

Some tips I have

Most avalanches form on the northeast face....be wary or stay off those

Get walkie talkies that go 20 miles

Take a lunch keep eye on as ravens know how to open bags and flaps to steal

Night riding is some of my favorite but be aware ALL ANIMALS are out at night and on the trail...but do it anyways IMO

always gas and oil whenever possible

CHEVRON with TECHNOLINE additive is THE BEST in elevations for performance and fouling...bring spare plugs and belts

Snow cookies and snow pillows can and will KILL YOU no matter how soft they look...dont hit one

As far as where to stay...we always stayed and rode outta LOLO HOT SPRINGS RESORT....Freaking awesome....bunnyhills and steep and deep and meadows lakes trails the fort sledding the Lewis and Clark trail Indian post offices carved on rocks no traffic all untouched look for fish creek road...climb that unplowed highway....one if the best I have ever been on

Yeah like 1.5 hrs south . Tog sucks it is Disneyland for midwest sledders . There is some decent stuff around but why go some place that you have to fight for it or burn a 1/4 tank of fuel to get to it. And don't even get me started on the grid the guide has to keep you in if you get in to that scam.

That must be why locals trailer to their parking lot, because there is no good riding nearby.

It sounds like you would have been better off ditching that guide and exploring on your own.

Did you ride the trail 20 miles and look for good powder around the trail? Because that's not how to do it. You just need to get away from the trail, even near Tog. Most riders stay near the trail.

If you want steep technical stuff, head over to Alpine, Afton area.

Look if you like it keep going and don't listen to any one else who has explored other arias over the decades .

Thought I’d update. I got our group reservations at copperline lodge in Saratoga. We start the 15 hour trek on Monday. Got us a guide for one day. Prob trailering to I believe Ryan park everyday unless somebody has a better idea. I have not taken an actual avy course but the rest of the group has. Obviously it’s too late for a live course at this point but does anybody have an online pre recorded webinar or video training training they could provide a link for?

I already said that I DON'T like Togwotee Lodge. I only wanted to point out that there is plenty of good riding in that area, as long as you get away from the trail and the lodge.

Not sure if Mike Duffey has any of his stuff available online but it might be worth checking.
