Yet another sled insurance question

Not specifically asking for how much and through who this time at least! I'm shopping around for insurance on my new 15 RMK 800. I've gotten a handful of online quotes and I'm getting quite frustrated. I've always put my sleds on my parents homeowners policy but they won't cover over a 750 cc 2 stroke. I filled out a progressive form, Identical policy, even pretty high deductibles ($1000 collision & comprehensive) with both my name then my dads. They wanted $875 a year for me (19 yr. old) and $245 a year for my dad (51 yr. old). Now I am listed as the sole owner of the sled, can my dad insure it under his name only? I added myself as a secondary driver and it only upped the quote to $370 which I wouldn't have a problem paying, but $875? No thanks I'd rather sell the sled. I paid $60 for my 08 RMK 600 under our house full coverage for 6 months and $30 for 6 months of fire & theft in the offseason. Thanks!

I would go with you as secondary driver. Then they cant raise a stink if a claim happens when you are driver. 19 year old and high Hp isn't good combo from insurance co perspective. I have had good service and pricing from progressive but I am 37 and have an 06 600. Totally different. I am sure you have more miles on a sled than me but insurance company just prices based on statistics and claims history (not just your history but those in your bracket)

You probably already know, and you did mention no go on over 750cc on the homeowners policy, but I think it's actually a 795cc. I wonder if 795cc might make a difference on the new quotes. Sometimes they have strange policies.

Be careful, if you insure the sled under your dad's name with you as a secondary driver and you have a claim, they will find out the sled is titled/registered in your name and the policy may be null and void

I am sure you have contacted the usual suspects...allstate, state farm, american family, farmers, AAA, etc...
Go through a broker and let them do the leg work. I am in the employee benefits industry and call on a lot of insurance agencies that also have a property casualty side of the house. If you would like me to point you in the direction of where to find a broker shoot me a pm with your location.

Try Nationwide. Seemed to have good rates and didn't make much difference when my 19 year old was listed as a primary driver on either a car or sled policy. Check the Northwood directory, Jim Kelley is a supporter and agent, I think he sells in WI.

I'd be careful about it being in your name and you not being primary driver.

Liberty Mutual for me, for many years. They lost my two homeowners and 3 cars a few years ago because they came through with a massive rate hike, but their snomo policy has always been competitive.

Indy, you have an expensive sled so if you hit a stump under the powder when you're "off-trailing", they will have to cover that. They know what guys your age do, at least statistically speaking you are higher risk. Just like my 17 year old kid driving his RSX, the cost is insane and went up 18% when he got caught hot rodding with his buds on I-43.
Insurance is a scam, but what are ya gonna do? You can always self insure if you can afford to replace the sled on your own.

I have always had American Family and have treated me well . I bought a brand new 2012 switchback assault and paid 260 for full coverage for the entire year , 500 deductable . My AF agent said they do not let you drop to storage insure in the summer , have to keep the same coverage all year . By the way im 34 years old and married .

Progressive does allow you to change coverage whenever you want. Helps keep my costs way down. Might not impact Indy's as much since he rides every week.

try HOMETOWN insurance in Shawano...ask for janette and get a quote..my wife is an insurance agent at a different agency however we have alot of our toys insured thru hometown....insurance is a scam ha don't even get me started... ( it is )
not being a smart a$$ indy but you should have checked rates on that sled before buying, my wife see's this happen all the time. if you have a lein (loan) on the sled you have to insure it, no way around that

I wouldn't go the secondary driver deal...if something major happens, I'd expect them to deny the claim if it's not titled by your dad. Just keep shopping. You are not going to get those low rates again, but you should be able to do better. Did you check with your motor vehicle carrier? Multi policy discounts can help lower pricing.

Indy......that $875 is a pretty good price for you. When I picked up my new M8000, my insurance shot up $500 for the year to about what your paying. Grant it, my deductible are much lower and I am 42, not 19. I get my insurance threw a broker who is always shopping around for me, because I carry darn near 15 different insurances.

My broker did give me a little insider info.......guess what, they watch sledneck videos too! Also they have seen in the last 5 years a growth in the mtn segment of sleds being bought and the skyrocketing claims associated with them. So, the claims are growing bigger than the pool of money collected, time for the insurance companies to catch up! That was nutshell she told me, and also, probably the next 3 years, expect a 10% increase till the insurance companies catch up. She also said, its pretty much across the board, so if your rates haven't gone up this year, hold onto your pants next year!

Yep not going to be riding groomed trails with RMK insurance companies know what a Rocky Mountain King is for. You make 1 claim & you will next year will be really expensive ...welcome to off trail riding costs that shiney new RMK will be all messed up after 1 year of off trail...I know you know this so a little surprised you seem surprised about high insurance rates?

I work with Radke Rhode (not even sure if that is spelled right) in New London. My underwriter is actually state auto and they have all my insurances right now. AmFam wanted to rob me and wouldn't insure my rental as a fire policy because I don't live there (duh its a rental).

What about adding it with your truck and getting multiple vehicle discounts??

here is something to consider
how is the company when it comes time to pay when u have a problem ?
i work in a shop and have worked with a lot of company's
progressive is one the worst there is when it comes time to pay
farmers/formost is one of the best i have worked with they always pay no questions = happy customers
state farm pays good also
i would not use progressive for anything no matter how cheap they are
u get what u pay for
