The latest 20 cent hike seems to have breathed new life into this thread.

Interesting post by Shelby and others about moving to a smaller vehicle. Three years ago when gas cracked $4.00, I kept my truck (paid for) and bought a Pontiac G5 (a.k.a Chevy Cobalt) for a commuter car, effectively doubling my mileage.

60,000 miles later, I figure I have burned almost 2,000 gallons less fuel than I would have with my truck. Even at a conservative $3.00/gallon average, that's about 6 grand that I've put towards the G5 rather than in the tank, not to mention extending the life of my truck by several years.

I have to admit that after having driven nothing but trucks for years, I was a little apprensive about driving the "pumpkin seed" but the transition wasn't as tough as I thought it would be. I still wouldn't want to hit anything with it and when the roads are really bad, the truck still comes out but overall it was a good choice. In the end it will be that much more money for sleddin'.

I did the same thing when my employer moved 15 miles south of our old place 2 years ago. Bought a 2008 Saturn Aura that gets 34 on a very good day rather than drive my 2001 Ram that gets 14 on a very good day (5.9L will kill ya). Basically I am about to pay off my car loan with the money I've saved in gas. And it's saving the truck life to.

Otherwise can't really change my driving habits when all I do is drive to work and back now that winter is over and no sledding.

Yes, I've changed my driving habits. Just yesterday I went in the north driveway at the gas station instead of the south like I usually do!

The only positive thing about the season ending. Every weekend between kerosene, gas for trip up north, and gas for the sled I am saving $120 every time I stay home!

I just paid $4.20/gal grrrrrr Was running on fumes and couldn't drive somewhere to get it cheaper - cheaper by pennies! Costco is where we've been filling up lately. Don't what they just jumped to. At least I don't have a commute to work!?! Crazy

My 17 year old son said there is a new parking lot full of scooters at his high school....

Some of the kids are parking there trucks and rat rides and opting for scooters for basic "around" town transportation.......My kid included, he works part time at a pizza
place and all his pay was going for gas.....he's now a Honda Ruckus guy....125mpg
on a gallon and half of gas..............

I have slowed down a little, that's all. I have a Yamaha Majesty that gets 55-60 miles a gallon. That one of those large scooter type cycles. 400 cc liquid cooled with tons of storage. No shifting, just gas and brake, it's also a 2 seat-er, will go 92 mph. Wife and I love to cruise around the countryside here in da UP.

Lenny, I have gotten that with my 87 magna...on a slow cruise day. Stay out of the throttle and even with 4 jugs....it gets amazing gas mileage.

But I for sure don't have your scenery....ratbasserd!

Mopeds are definatly the "thing" at my high school now too.

I just drive faster so I have less time to think about the gas prices :D

I would love a moped, especially a 2-stroke. Just think it'd be a stupid investment, since if I buy something from a store, it has to be small to be able to bring it home on a moped.. But with the gas prices, you could take trips to the store to buy small stuff you wouldn't think of buying unless you made a "round-trip" to multiple stores. Also, the reason I think mopeds are getting popular with kids in school is you don't need a motorcycle liscense, just a drivers liscense.
