LMD and toolmaker - Um, are you somehow suggesting that taking daily walks MAY not be enough? Uh oh!! :D

Lenny, what's our time frame here? By the time we can swim in Superior? (that may work out REAL well for me in case it's not like last summer and not doable at all!?)

what's really cool is that it does not matter how much you wanna loose. My motivation is that I am not happy and do not like living unhappy so that's why I am doing this. I know the first 5 lbs will not show on my body but it start somewhere. I have been watching my intake and riding bike for 4 days now and officially 198 this morning, just less food in my system I suppose.

So, those of us interested in this lets post a goal or target weight or however we want to describe our intent. No doubt I am self conscious of my spare tire but it motivates me to tell my weight because loosing it is a great satisfaction. I subscribe to less food intake and more exercise so that is my approach. I always understood that some foods promote faster metabolism and an example is lean protein and leafy greens. Personally I have had enough of my laziness and am stoked to get rid of this with a realistic lifestyle change. My main problem is my diner portion and evening snacks so that is the focus of a lesser food intake. My exercise will be biking as I really do enjoy it. A few years back both my brothers and I rode our bikes to Kitty hawk NC from N.central Illinois, we burned crazy amounts of calories and all shrunk in size. I lost 11 lbs of fat and fit into a 32 waist. My goal may not be as much as other but let me encourage you guys because regardless of the number it comes down to personal happiness. I didn't gain weight till I was 40 and enjoyed a lifetime of being fit and now an disgusted when I look in the mirror. When I ride my bike I can feel my leg tap my belly on the upstroke and that shows me clearly what I need to do. My wife wants to loose 40 lbs but is severely discouraged and not to much interested in participating in this effort. For about 2 weeks she has been watching her food intake has has been consistent but reluctant to get physical. She likes to ride bike with me and plans to start Mon on her first ride so maybe she'll see some progress.

So, if you need to loose 20 or 200, please don't let the number bother you because it really will discourage you quickly. Making the decision and staying motivated is the key IMO. We have 4 people that have made a decision and now we all can use the motivation. Any ideas as to how to maintain motivation long term? Lets talk about what not to eat, what to eat. How to start out exercising without over stressing ourselves and becoming discouraged. We have a turkey in the oven now. Man do I love turkey and plan to eat but less potatoes and more leafy greens. I'll let you know how that goes in a few hrs.

So post you food goals and exercise goals so we can chat about it.

Yeah I don't want to look at the scale. I finally hit the gym yesterday. Did about 20 minutes of cardio and 40 minutes of lifting. I feel it as I just woke up. Need a day to recoup and it's on!

so, your in?

I must admit I gained 5 - 10 lbs this winter due to lack of activity. I am from Iowa & ditch banging can give you a pretty good workout. This winter I only put on 125 ditch banging miles as there was hardly any snow around here. I am currently tipping the scales @ a robust 230. My goal is < 200 lbs. If I get there by Hay Days (Minnesota in September) I may have to reward myself with some new gear. Jim.

so your in?

OK, here's the grim statistic: Weighed in last night in gym clothes and socks - 237# ("wash machine build" keeps coming to mind).

Figuring in the muscle to fat displacement, I'm setting a goal of being in shape at 220# by Sept 1 (yes, this year). If figure I'm better off being in shape at 220 that a doughboy at 210 (or 237).

game on! - I'm IN!

Whoops, I guess it's really fat to muscle - I've already achieved the other

I was out when he said going from a size 34 waist to a 32.
Yea, right I'm in a whole other league.

that's the beauty of this, we all have an individual story unique to ourselves. We cannot compare unless we wanna compare our unhappiness than we can unite and encourage eachother. Lets do this okay, you in?

are we doing a contest because we can figure the handicap if we tell eachother our goal?

How about the first person to achieve their goal wins a back country ride with Lenny next winter? You don't have to take anyone to any secret squirrel spots or anything...and no abuse in numbers of who you bring along.

Mine goal is 20 lbs and at least 4 inches off the gut. I was always skinny as a kid and young adult. I weigh now what I did when I walked into the hospital to have my first of 3 kids 14.1 years ago. I've worked out here and there but never really made a concerted effort to really diet and be healthy. The only reason I'm not severely over weight is simple genetics. But I'm not up to par. And have decided I'm DONE carrying around my extra baggage. I decided this before you posted, Lenny...so maybe it's some divine intervention letting me know that it really is time to 'git er done!'

So - my goal is 20lbs and 4 inches off the waist. Am gonna measure all the key points for my own benefit but for here? 20/4.

Wow, that's awesome Skylar! How is she doing it? Lots of "wrestling" with her hubby I hope! ;)

BAHAHAHA, that has increased dramatically, but that is not the reason for the weight loss. She is just watching her calorie intake, and not eating the crap we normally eat. Of course, I like the crap we normally eat, which is why I don't lose any weight LOL.

Well I'am in.
I hit 219 in January and it needs to stop. I'am so out of shape. I started little jogging in January, but I hate running with every fiber of my being. The only up side to this warmer March is I have started walking outside. Have been doing 2 miles a day.
I also have a road bike and enjoy that also. Down to 205 last fall riding 10 miles a day, but then gets cool out and quit exercising. Deer hunting starts and start eating an drinking more and weight came back.

I don't eat horibly, just eat too much. I work shift work and it's easy to come home after a 2nd shift and drink beer and eat potatoe chips. I cut that out. Really cutting back on beer also, not totally but still have one before dinner.

Highest was 219, today I weighed 213. My goal is 190.
My goal is to work at it slowly by being active all summer, I'am in no hurry to win a contest.

Walking is great, that's what I do now with my doggies, 3 miles a day, to keep the pounds from coming back. I had to join the gym to get away from all the beer drinking the guys were doing in the garage, seems I had to be there to open their cans for them :)

I agree about no hurry to win a contest, everybody will do it differently. It just adds a little competitiveness and I am sure I will not win.

Mmm, tempting lenny. Let think about it as I finish my Dutch apple pie ala mode.

you wanna join us?

Ok Lenny, since you called me out, I'm in.

I have always been a physical, active person. Problem is I am a sugaraholic. Just today I had two VERY LARGE pieces of Atomic Cake, box of Thin Mints and a big bag of Trail Mix (chocolate/nut) not to mention three regular meals. Wish I could say this is the exception, but unfortunately it is the
norm. I'm active enough (gym 5 days a week plus outside activities), just consume too much junk.

May be this is the incentive I need. Anyway 212 this am (birthday suit) and would like to see 190.
I'll start Monday that way it will give me the weekend to polish off the ice cream, cookies, cake and muffins. (I was taught not to be wasteful.)
