trucks are for work and pulling end of story
it is shocking how many office guys with no toys to pull buy them ? I have no idea I would much rather drive a sports car for a daily driver. I think they buy them to feel more like a man as they step out from there cubical with the pink sorry salmon shirt and walk to the truck after work.you know the type u see them driving z71 all the time .

That is funny stuff...and so true!

Well, I do work in a cubicle and I do drive a Z71 Sierra but I don’t actually have a salmon shirt, although I think it might be my color. I saw a Ford commercial a couple of years back in which a Ford exec stated that Ford was designing its truck engines to specifically target low end torque. I’m wondering if the 5.0 truck version might be one of the results of that effort.

Personally, I like the new Fords and wouldn’t hesitate to buy one. All other things being equal, I would definitely go with the 5.0, but having been a GM guy for 50 years my opinion might be suspect (and, as previously stated, unwanted). Did I mention that I’m also going back to Polaris this year? (This is where Ezra should re-state his “Mistress Helga” phone number offer.)

I would have loved to have an F-150 (but made do with a lesser Mitsubishi Mighty Max and Chevy S-10), for at least two reasons:

  1. Sitting up at that altitude gives you much better visibility, and therefor a better perspective on the traffic situation in your vicinity.
  2. My creaky ol' back and arthritic hip would much prefer climbing up into/down out of the driver's seat of a proper truck than scrunching down into and crawling out of the much lower seat of a sports car or even a sedan.
Of course by now I have driven the wheels off the ol' '97 S-10, I've got a hip replacement, and I don't drive as much, so I'm currently leaning toward a Ford Focus, mainly for the gas mileage.

Nash....WAIT!

If you are a ford guy, there is a hybrid version Fusion of the machine coming out that uses a tiny gasoline motor to charge the Lithium Ion battery only...it never drives the car and unlike the toyota rolling shoe, the unit will go at least 60mph without turning the gasoline engine on at all. The gas mileage is going to set a new standard...this is not a plug in job, but a real car and the price point will be in the mid 20's (I have insider info on this)...Atkinson-cycle hybrid...been runnin em around Romeo for 2 years 24/7/365...and they have not been able to kill it. It's gunna be a game changer...watch for it soon. Ford will have a plug in...but it's not ready for prime time....inside source.

EZ....get the ecoboost, you old skin flint! It gets 94% of it's torq at 2200 rpm and will out pull most v-8 gas engines...cause it's a turbo...all the makers are working on their own versions right now...just like the Webber engine, it pulls hard and is light and if you stay off the fun flipper you get the mileage....pay no attention to the window sticker...they never take into account the axle ratios which is where all the bananas are counted. Get the 3.18 axle....NOT the 3.55 or higher which is where most dealers order them for stock. That one will get better than sticker if you are just running...if you are gunna haul a bunch...don't get it and live with about 18-20 best....remember that a turbo works better with higher octane gas and like all engines today will squeeze out better performance all by itself if you can find gas with no alcohol in it or higher octane.

If you drive a turbo...there is no going back...ford is going to have them across their entire line by 2014 because they have the fun factor and...they get the gas mileage. So far they are standing up pretty good. Watch for everybody to show up with some by 2015...notice nobody is crying the blues about the new doubled...doubled...gas mileage standards?? Whatzat tell yah??? Little birds are chirping if you aren't too deaf to hear them!!!

I do like the turbo but we are talking a real 8g that is new holdover cat out of salvage .
but yeah I love the idea of that 2200rpm and at max torque that would be sweet especially yanking up hill at 4 to 9k feet for hrs at a time.
but the reality is most of my driving is in town the last truck average mph was 28 after 130k mi
and ask any one who knows me my average freeway speeds are 75 or better.and no I don't sit in the truck on hot days with the A/C on and watch the guys work and call them on the phone and tell them what to do.that is just a dirty rummer.
if heading north with 4 guys we will usually jump in a suburban so my truck only goes with 2 guys hauling my clam.
I did look at some fiat rams just to see the diff in what they are doing fiat is using coil springs in the rear now.guess if u want to add a leaf in a fiat you put in air bags? they say it is a better ride
I always bring my trucks in to get the extra leaf put in I do hall heavy stuff often and sometimes with the springs I ride the frame.

I have a 2011 F150 w/Eco 5 1/2 Crew Cab with 3.71 rear axle and now about 15K miles. My son choose a 2011 F150 w/5.0 6 1/2 Extended Cab with a 3.55 rear axle and now has about 24K miles.

Highway I get 15 to 17 and he gets 19 to 21. Towing my 23' enclosed trailer is no problem with the Eco as it does pull like the diesels I recently got out of. My problem is the gas mileage is close to 9 where as the diesels got 12+. They tell me the turbos need to break in and people are saying after 20K I should see improvement. I did not buy the Eco for the mileage, but with all of the heavy advertising saying 21 on the Eco, it does make it disapointing.

My son does not tow anything, but the motor does seem strong and Ford did tune it for the truck and I would have no problem with it. Kind of wish I had gone the 5.0 route just for the unloaded mileage as half my miles are unloaded.

Ezra,
You won't be disappointed with a 5.0L. I bought a 2011 F150 Crew w/ 6.5 box in December of 2011 and have 10K on it now. Granted, the wife drives it 85% of the time and I'm relegated to the minivan. But, a happy wife makes a happy life - and now she doesn't complain about me dropping money into the 77 Ford I'm rebuilding.
Now, back on topic. My city mileage is about 14.5 and Hwy is around 20 at 70mph. The truck has plenty of power and we pulled 3 sleds to West Yellowstone with it in March - no problems at all. It is really quiet inside - coming from a 2003 F250 w/a 6.0 Diesel I like the quieter ride more. The truck is a bear to see anything when backing up but you can see to the sides and front well (I do have reverse sensors which helps out). I don't have any complaints with the truck and haven't been able to find any problems in 10K that needed attention. Overall the best vehicle I've ever owned.
The turbo motor was a $2000 upgrade when I bought my truck BUT I got a $900 rebate for buying the 5.0L - so I saved $2900+tax...it will take 5 years to make that up in fuel savings if the Eco got 2mpg better economy. I also got the Ford Rebate by financing through Ford Credit - they said I had to use Ford Credit for 3 payments THAT ISN"T TRUE - after 4 weeks and a week before my first payment was due I went to my credit union and financed the truck through them. Ford Credit's interest rate was 5.9% and I got a $1000 rebate for using it - my bank dropped the interest to 2.9% in about 10 minutes and only cost my $18 in title fees!!! There is no penalty in MN for paying off a loan early and Ford doesn't make you sign anything stating that you'll use Ford Credit for the entirity of the loan so you can pay the truck off at any time - EVEN if you are paying it off with another loan.

Hope I've been helpful...

yeah I did get the 5.0 f150 like it so far like the sync works well.had the trailer break installed I guess there is a app I can get and some how I tell the phone what trailer I have on and it tells the truck dont know may have to do some reading or it was a sales pitch no matter.
the main trailer is only 2700 empty so prob 6000 or so loaded for a week should be no issue now if some of my buds kids would just get a DL we could get a designated driver for those 15hr drives then it may be rv time

The reason you are gett'n poor mileage with the Eco is all due to the axle ratio...most dealers orde the machines that they expect folks to haul heavy loads with the 3.55 or 3.73 rear ends....they will haul better but they won't ever get the mileage the sticker says. If you haul occasionally and you go light most of the time, be sure to get the harder to find 3.11 rear end and watch the fuel mileage jump to the mid 20's if you stay off of the fun flipper. The government controls the sticker info and pays NO attention to axle ratios....pretty lame and the source of frustrated Ford Eco buyers.

I don't know why they can't throw a two speed rear end in those units, and then you would have the best of both worlds.

Turbo is the future on both cars and trucks and the others are in a catch up mode compared to Ford...who will have turbo's in their whole line up of cars and trucks by 2015. Small displacement motors that put big power out when you want it.

I am not exactly sure of this but I think the eco costs like a grand more and you lose $500 rebate for not taking the V-8 engine...so it costs more but as more people get familar with the power of the turbo the resale on the turbo will bring half of that back. And if you can stay out of the flipper, the gas mileage will pay back in less than 2 years for someone doing 15k miles a year or more because the difference at $4 per gallon is about a grand a year. Over 5 yrs, you put $3k back in your pocket.

I was looking at the Eco but they just did not have it in the package I got if they did I would have thought hard about it
My bud drove my truck a bit and went and traded in his pos 04 z71 burb for a 4 dr lairet with hd towing and Eco boost
So I guess I will have something to compare to in the long run
I was trying to tell him with the Eco he did not Need the low gearing of the hd tow package but he was not hearing it after driving a underpowered burb for 8 yrs
The Most he yanks is a alloy inline alloy 3 place or a ski boat from garage to launch down the street 2 imes a yr

Anonomoose, I hear you about the rear gears and gave it credibility until reviewing other similar equipped trucks. On the F150 forum there are guys with the same set up as mine and they do get much better mileage. Based on a poll on that forum, you either get the higher mileage or your down low like mine. I wish I never got rid of the Excursion diesel....

Just let me know when you wanna see my taillights.... I eat chipped 5.4 3 valves all day long for breakfast can't imagine it'd be much different with the 5.0 and all I got is a vette servo. :D

Well a diesel is another animal so not really comparing apples to apples on that one.

But if you want to get the mileage with the ecobooster....never go over the 3.55 or so and better to find the 3.11 if you can find it.

EZ...your dealer could have found one that fit you but they wanted to sell what they had on the lot because it is better for the profit margin...but if they did a dealer trade, you could get it exactly the way you wanted it.

Also for those guys who have the eco....be sure to get a small grill to cover up that big football size hole below the hood because if you take a rock in thru there, the intercooler will take a hit and it's expensive to replace and not covered under the warranty...so I am told. Cheap ones available on the web...just protect it from a rock rolling down the road.

trucks are for work. but if u want to line up one of your poos I will be glad to spank u on any given sheet of ice.
after driving trucks for 35yrs I have learned a few lessons and the biggest lesson u want a quality work truck that will get u to work and be worked buy the # 1 selling truck 30yrs in a row.want a truck to go to church on sun and have that cushy ride u buy a silverado.
now lets get back to racing who races pickup trucks? why they are all slow handle like turds. think living in cheese land and working at the man mall is giving u a bad neck burn may want to try some spf 80 before u start thinking carharts qualify as formal wear.Oh sorry forgot u live in WI they do.
my wife had a 98 corvette if I remember it was kinda fast not wrx SDI fast but quick and if I remember it was something like 345hp. so my guess would be with your cowboy race car with some vet tuner parts is not exceeding that 345 hp.the new 5.0 is 360 hp with 380 ft lb tq and the ecoboost is 365hp 420lbs tq both with close ratio 6 speed trannys you may want to watch your self before putting that pay check on the line.
