Factory Turbo Yamaha

Wife moved to a 900 Ace Renegade last year from a Pol 600 classic and loves it. She rides faster then before as the sled is easy to handle and very stable even though she's down over 25HP from her old sled. Based on our experience with the 900, I moved from my trusty Rage GT to a 1200 Renegade this year and very happy with it too. Made three trips to the Seney/GM area this year and saw more 900's than any other new sled. Actually saw a lot of new 1200's too (first year for 1200 in XS chassis so they had to be '16s).

i think there is a simple reason why the 900 (and 1200) doo's are popular. These sleds may be 4S but they handle like 2S and their weight is in line with 2S sleds of just a few years ago. The 900 especially is very light in the front and both sleds handle deep powder well. They are also both light years ahead of my Rage GT which is clearly much heavier, top heavy and harder to handle.....it was an easy upgrade decision for me (or anyone else on a deltabox 1 or 2 Yamaha).

The average joe rider wants to go on a long ride, not break down, not get beat up, have fun and look good doing it. For every "turbo" buyer, there are 15-20 average joe buyers like me.

I love horsepower, the more the better, but find that 135 already gets me in trouble frequently. 180 would be suicidal..... :)

Agonized long and hard about ACE 9 GSX LE this season for wife, had one locally for great price, but just felt 90 HP not enough for me to jump on when wife not riding, and didn't want to spend another $750 for Cudney PB80 to get performance. 1200 would be perfect but you never see deals on these, just not many around. Think eventually this is where I go; ACE 9 with R-motion or 1200 shorty.

EDIT: If I'd have known for a fact I could have reflashed that 900 to 110-115 HP, I'd of bought it at $7999 happy as a clam. Anybody know the cost on that reflash, with labor??

If the 900ACE was more like 110 - 120h.p., it would be the single most popular sled. Lots of E-tec guys like me would jump ship to 4 stroke if this were the case. My wife and daughter love their 900's; if I am riding w/just them I would be happy on one too. It's when I get "with the guys" that it's not quite enough.

Somebody please confirm or say "not true": is there a reflash for the 900 that adds some HP?

Yep - I think snowtech article on it said if it had 10 more hp, it would be the holy grail - a 4 stroke that is light enough and powerful enough to ride off trail.

Exactly what I was thinking when riding with the wifey, her sister and BIL last month!

Also...I have taken the wife's 900 off into powder a few times just for fun and it's amazingly agile......my old Rage GT would sink iike a rock...when Doo says around 500 pounds, I believe them, and the mass is centrally located and the sled is very easy to handle.

Hey, where's whitedust?......too busy counting his pennies. :D
Think it will be a great sled. Just not sure how many they can sell. Especially when selling same sled across town, maybe I'm wrong.
Would love try one out but that's it my 800 has plenty for me already.

my bud owns a ski shop and has done many on the sparks . no issues yet and most of those skis are wfo then off back to wfo most of the time

Funny how this thread went from a factory turbo Yamaha thread to talking about a Doo 900 ace. Kind of ironic and a bit off topic.

Seeing how I've not seen one yet in person... So is there a huge difference between the 998 and the 1049 besides the ability to bolt on a transmission for the XYZ???

btw the 900 ace is a decent motor platform if your looking for something with half the hp...

I'm here been getting in some end of season trail miles. I don't have a lot to say about Sidewinder until I plant my butt on one. If the SW has a different sitting position than Viper I might be interested. I'm not looking forward to paying for insurance for 200hp snowmobile so that is in the back of my mind. I didn't like the new single shot on 2016 Apex so not sure where to go if buying another sled. Will Yamaha drop the Apex XTX next year or come back with a something new to replace it? Lots of Yamaha riders are HP junkies so SW will sell & soooo many variations makes my head spin. SW could have been marketed as a hyper sled much like the Mach but that does not seem like the plan. I'll ride the SW next to my Apex then I'll know where it fits in my mind. All we really know now is SW has some Viper roots but designed around new Yamaha 998 factory turbo engine & all the Kip video is straight line stuff....sooner or later you have to turn and aborb bumps at high speed. No idea about how SW handles on trails we jsut know it is fast on top end. I need to know more of how that SW hp relates to trail use, unplowed Frs & powder the type of riding I do.

I'm quite happy myself. Even though I have him blocked (again), his taking 6,256 posts to tell us why the Sidewinder won't work for him, along with how much his Apex XTX is perfect for the trails he rides and further garbaging up threads has been quite refreshing to me.

I guess I spoke too soon...... :(

That motor will not benefit us (You and I) at all. Our 160hp is PLENTY for where we go and how we ride. We don't do the off trail mountain/boondocking thing where maybe that extra HP helps...but on the trails. Come on. Some of the younger (more is better) people may spend the money for it and I hope so. I want Yamaha to succeed. I have loved every sled from Yamaha since my first 1983 SS440. Each one better than the previous one. I haven't had a reason to upgrade since 2012 when the Apex XTX came in black. From model year 2002 until 2012 there was something that enticed me to upgrade almost every year. For now I sit tight and not spend any money until I have something that interests me.

sometimes it's best to just not to say anything. I have suggested to WD to ignore you and your comments about him. Can you do the same? I don't believe any of us want to hear your backhanded comments about others.

Ah quite the contrary kind sir! But think what you want to think...you are two peas in a pod. And on the list as of now......bye!

Anybody that sends PM's on this forum and other websites blatantly and wrongly stabbing me in the back will get retribution.....within the guidelines of the forum (a Moderator on this site knows all about this). Does he think that this will not get back to me? Just a perfect example of the mentality of this person.

There I said it and I'm done......moving on. No more "backhanded", but legal comments. Blast away if you want.....IDC.

Yeah I'm interested in better handling not more engine 162 ponies plenty. I do like Yamaha quailty & hope maybe this chassis is better than Viper fit & finish. 130hp Viper not enough for us and SW too much but much rather have too much than not enough. You buy new I buy used cherries from Kip so I'm thinking down the line a SW might be ok so will keep an open mind and run one see how I like it.

As far as GD took you advise & ingnoring him. Good advice! :)
