I think Cam is 1 of the best young QBs to enter the league. Very immature at first but his brother & Dad sat him down had Cam look at himself changed him big time. Johnny Football might be the same give him some time has good arm, good legs always a place somewhere for those type of QBs & why Cutler was sooooooo over rated by many. I was not pleased when Cam broke his back srewing around in his truck & I would let him heal & not play him again panthers not real contenders this year.... Cam too valuable imo....very exciting player!
Cams best year was his rookie year. Until film caught up with him.
Quarterback: Cam Newton, Panthers
If you're thinking "Cam Newton isn't overrated," it's probably because you don't think Newton should have been rated that highly in the first place. He was once, but maybe after re-evaluation we all got a little too excited about a quarterback who had a ton of opportunities for rushing touchdowns inside the 10-yard line and not a lot of skill as a passer.
As a rookie in 2011, Newton took the league by storm by passing for over 400 yards in each of his first two starts and breaking the NFL record for rushing touchdowns in a season by a quarterback (14), but that was a precursor for … nothing really all that special. His passing yards have dipped every season since and, this year, Newton has rushed for just 257 yards and two touchdowns this season, which would be more than fine if he was an excellent passer, but he's not.
Newton has just eight touchdowns and five interceptions over eight starts, while the Panthers are headed towards their worst season under head coach Ron Rivera. They have just one win over their last seven games, and their first win of the year came when Derek Anderson was the starting quarterback.
It's easy to blame this on Carolina flushing out their entire wide receiver corps from a year ago, but Kelvin Benjamin and Greg Olsen are a good starting point for any quarterback to have. Overall, the Panthers have dropped 15 of Newton's passes, which is … about average. Alex Smith has seen 20 drops on fewer attempts. Colin Kaepernick has seen 18 drops on almost the exact same number of attempts.
And no matter who the receivers have been, Newton hasn't really performed any differently. He's never posted a passer rating of 90 or above and he's never really had any consistent success. He's also had career struggles in the red zone (passer rating of 75.9) and unlike Andrew Luck or Russell Wilson, players of comparable age, Newton hasn't been a last-minute hero (rating of 69.8 with under two minutes left and his team trailing).
The team around him could be better, but he could also be better. A lot better.
