you'll pay to play....but when others find your tracks and follow them around the land you and the land owner will be pissed. Stick with state land and we wont have these issues
Yes I'm sure that's true but thats how you make it personal and we as snowmobilers police our selfs ,witch we should do anyways but people don't care when it don't cost them anything
After paying a off trail permit of $75 I'm sure most of us would help each other including the land owners.trail maps with big fines for off trail ridding
Might help the fines can got back to land owners for repair and to local snowmobile clubs
This is not perfect but it's in my quote to get people thinking (state land is the best way for now)

The Lemming effect is alive and well. I went offtrail to one of favorite spots on a high ridge 2 weeks ago. New snow the whole way with no recent tracks. Returned an hour later and now I saw that my track was well worn so we climbed the ridge and there were 6 guys with sleds up there with beers enjoying the view. Not a blade of grass nor fern frond was damaged, but when they were leaving one tossed his can over the cliff and the rest tossed their cans on the way down. We picked up the cans and packed them out. The problem is not that these guys went off trail but what they did leaving garbage isn't a real cool way to impress a landowner.

I personally think a dirt bike/snocross track will solve many problems. Many of the ricky racers and bobby boondockers are not looking for logging roads with fresh pow or technical hill climbs through the trees, they just want to hit some jumps and have some people look at em...

And what category do you fall under under? I did not see a "wise beyond there years teenage helmet mohawk mogul mashers" category.. Although I thought I saw you finally ditched the mohawk.

BTW there is are parks for people who want to(or think they want to) hit jumps and ramps and get people to look at them. Ex:

Planet X Aurora,MN
ERX Elk River,MN
Evolution Sled Park Bessemer,Mi
quadna mountain park

Not to mention most regional races offer trail stock classes that you can sign up for to try out racing and get the jumping itch out of ya.

..Just sayin!

I think it is kinda funny thinking about a crew of 121s trying to follow and get out of some of the places I have been.heck there have been times I had questions if I was going to climb out. still chuckeling.
I know a couple of guys in vail that pretty much can ride their 120" skidoos anywhere. They aren't the norm, but it really comes down to track speed and skill.

I know what you mean, the last time we were up I picked up 3 beer cans that some fricken idiots left laying in the snow. If these idiots have room to bring them, they have room to take them out. FREAKING IDIOTS!

I always thought that idiots drive to slow and maniacs drive to fast. litterers (is that a word?) litter. Let's just call them scumbags with total disregard for other peoples property and then put our blood presure on simmer. I have found plenty of blown belts hanging from branches to make a new set of tires so far this year.

Woah, jeez! Pipe down buddy! LOL I've never trespassed in the U.P. I ride a 500 by choice, I belong to a club, mark the trails and brush them, not sure how i get thrown into this category you speak of?

There is a thread on HCS Michigan about "Off trail UP pics thread". Here is 2 posts in the thread..

first: question
So how does off trail work?
Find a hole and go?
What kind of trouble can you get in?
Love to do it but we're do you start.

second: an answer
1. Ride down trail
2. See a logging road/good line through the trees
3. Turn off trail and baja your *** off
4. Pull off some sick climbs up hills and around trees
5. Get stuck and repeat multiple times

Im not an off trail rider, but this is NOT good for anybody.

The only thing missing from that answer is "verify that area is state land and not private land". Unfortunately that is the most important part of the answer.

Like I posted in that thread on HCS, if you want to ride off trail get a GPS with mapping software and check some online and hard copy maps. You can plot out all kinds of area's to ride and not trespass. If you are going to ride in MI use the DNR website and check their maps that show public land. When done properly and with some common sense and common courtesy off trail riding will leave no scars on the land.

On a side note, while I agree with most of the comments on here regarding the annoyance with inconsiderate riders and some of the morons that our sport attracts I can't help but laugh at some of the people who seem to be mad that more and more people enjoy riding off trail. The "I boondocked before it was cool" attitude is funny. Maybe I'll make a few t-shirts and sell them.

No one is mad that more people are riding off-trail if you actually read what is being said. What people are mad about is the lack of respect people have for land they don't own.

I have a tee-shirt idea for you but don't have time to draw it up. I'll get it to you later.

Wow..... cool.

For the record I agree with you about the lack of respect being the problem, I just think it's funny that some people (which apparently you read to mean you) seem to think that the amount of people riding off trail is as much of a problem as the way those people are riding off trail. My point is that if people rode as they should and didn't act like bozo's it wouldn't matter how many were out there. There'd be a bit less pow to go around I guess but not the issues we have now.

I seem to have struck a nerve! Listen I am just calling things as I see it. I was just razzing ya btw. But I do, however, think you make rather ignorant statements and act as if you have all the answers. Try sitting back and learning from the wealth of knowledge on this forum. You might be surprised and less likely to sound like you have all the answers. I have nothing against young sledders( I was once one, and not that long ago). I think your enthusiasm for the sport is great. I do get tired of the "all knowing" attitude you seem to radiate. I don't know you, but man, between you and Polarisrider1 and your post W#@%$ wars and constant remarks on seemingly every topic on this board its hard not to think we all know just about everything about you two. I could comment about the "small winkys" funny that was made but I am not insecure in ANY way about my winky...must be a Polaris complex! Haha. I'm sure I will get blasted by your cronies on here..but whatever. If you stick your neck out there and make smart @$$ remarks you should be ready for criticism on said remarks.

Also I am curious as to when I mentioned anything about you A) trespassing B)the sled you ride C) belonging to a club and marking trails and brushing them?

further..yes I currently ride a cat..so what? I have owned many sleds from all manufactures and have liked and hated sleds from each and every one of them. Nice red blinders you and Polarisrider1 have got there pal! Brand loyalty is great! Everybody has they're preference. I just am open minded to buy the best suited sled for me and my preferences at that point and time. I choose to not be ignorant and arrogant about what I ride. I was this way for a period of time and realize how limiting it was to think that way. All four have great sleds and decided to give cat a try this year for the first time since my first sled when I was 12..a 72' Panther 303. BTW I am blown away on how much I like my 11' Sno pro 600..amazing sled! 5 years ago I would have laughed at the thought of owing a cat! All four brands have major issues at some point and time(see 12' cats for example). One of my riding buddies currently has a "confusion" 900...nuff' said!

Now back to the topic at hand..sorry to every one for going off topic. I guess I just felt the need to pad my post count! Gotta long way to go to catch up to Indy and his buddy!

Don't toss me into the mix. I have had skidoos (as late as an 05 Renegade), Yamahas, Scorpions, Moto ski, Rupp and John Deere over the years. If you don't like Indy or me that is your issue. Your whining will not make us go away. Just don't open a post we are on. that's life. Indy has hundreds of friends in here and I must have a few. I do receive phone calls, emails and Pm's from those who agree and say they come to John Dee to see what I have cooking. Snowmobiling is in my family as a business and a recreation since 1972. It is our way of life. You can not change any of that. If you wish I can give you a site you may fit better in. Name calling, swearing and general teen angst runs rampent there. Yet disguists as a snowmobile forum. Pm me if you want the address.

My shirt wasn't going to be directed at you but you gave me the idea. I still like the idea and might see if I can get some made up. It would be the silhouette of a snowmobile that is circled and has a slash going through it... much like the signs in the UP. Underneath it would say ONLY IDIOTS TRESPASS.

I took it as directed at me because I made reference to not seeing many long-track sleds in the past. Sorry!
