So after 15 pages what have we learned?
If you like to wrench... but a 800
If you like to gamble.... buy a 800
If Polaris is your God...buy a 800
If after spending 10k and you have money left over to buy a gizmo, that may or my not work,... buy a 800
If your a trail rider who racks up tons of miles and doesn't like to miss trips....don't buy a 800!
Think that covers it. :p

If you like a 1 ton machine... buy a yamaha
If you want to dart into the trees... buy a yamaha
If you want to sink in powder... buy a yamaha

Just thought I'd keep adding to the list :)

I like to ride that's why I went back to a 600.

Mr. Happy wasn't around to offer good constructive advice as to potential solutions to the inevitable blow up of my 800 even though I got pounded by many others for doing so.
I wish I knew as much as he claims to because I would have loved to be able to share that info with others that were/are in my shoes to help them keep their 800's running and not just chastise and belittle those who offer their thoughts and opinions regarding the 800's.
I agree with him that they were junk. You've seen pics of mine but I took a gamble and lost. Paid $5,000 for it and sold it DOA for $2,500. Not bad but I wish the story didn't end that way.
I'll keep my 600 SB for a couple years and then pick up a 2013 or later and roll the dice again.

Yep that pretty much is the same take aways I got from this thread & add piston slop problem to 800s for grins & giggles & you got to enjoy wrenching on Poo 2s 800s. If all those stars align you bought the ideal sled for your use & you can claim others have Poo envy. Anything else? :)

So dumb question,as i am not mechaniclly inclined enough to rebuild a motor on my sled.If i were to take it to my local dealer and have them pull it apart to see what the tolerances are on everything, shape of pistons, check compression before tearing down.If anything is out of whack at this point can i get any of this covered under warranty ?

There actually is some good info on here even though we'll need to call in Indiana Jones to unearth it.

No. Based on direct experience, they will check the compression but if that is off, they won't do anything unless they tear it down. My estimate for a top end rebuild only was $1,900 from a Polaris dealer using Polaris parts which we all know was the cause of the problem.

Boy that might be kinda tough. You better have a damn good dealer. All most know how to do anymore is read the digital wrench and fix what it says.

Jeez, that price is absolutely ridiculous.

Sorry. Missed the warranty part. They'll check the compression for you but, if that's within tolerance, you're SOL on the rest.

It gets better. They decided based on the damage to the piston, they HAD to do the lower end as well. Estimate for that was $3,900 plus whatever else they found wrong.
I don't wrench so I sold it and bought a 600.

I would have too.

A compression test don't tell you much I have a friend that brought me a 700 mountain max last summer all the cylinders test out at 120psi but the middle cylinder the piston skirt was busted and had a hole on the bottom of the engine where it shot out.

I agree. Besides, without all the wisecracks, it wouldn't be fun to read. You can't really learn much from reading the snowmobile magazines, since they are dependent on ad revenue, so it's good to get the info here.

You've said that before, but that price still seems insane. When my Fusion blew up (carb boot), it was about the same price, but that was an entire rebuild (crank and all).

ya DUDE they are not they same pistons...in 10 they went to a new manufacture of pistons they blamed the piston manufacturer at first then same issue with the motors...I do know what they did in 08-13...I kept track...
The pistons are the same. Made by a different manufacturer but they are still WAY WAY out of specs. If you go to RK Tek's website and look for pistons for you 800 do you see a different piston for the 09' and the 13'? NO! you don't Einstein. I know in 13' they beefed up the piston and cylinder skirts but my question to you is why would they have to? Because their pistons are so far outta spec that they will beat themselves into an oval and eventually shoot the skirt through the bottom of the engine. So yeah, the pistons are still the same....PERIOD! I kept track. As far as Redneck still making the gizmo (or the enhancement kit) as I think they may call it now. I've emailed them a few times in the last couple months and gotten no response. So if they are still in business, they have really bad practices, or the rumors going around snowest about them being out of business are true. Call it what you want but I haven't been able to get ahold of them for their $3.20 worth of plumbing from Menards that they sell for a 1000% mark up.
