the gizmo? I'll give you $4.99 for one, heck, I'll take 3 for $13
Lol, Those things were more like $299. A guy could make one from parts found at Menards for about $5. And the sad thing is they actually had people buying them. Apparently people with a lot more money than Buck-85.

The other sad thing is people actually thought their sled running at 160 degrees was a good thing LOL

Nick, have you found any info from Poo on this 800 issue. What does Poo say about it. Remember all the reflash Poo was putting out. Was it related in any way? What else can you elaborate on the issue

I have a guy that I work with and his son is the head mechanic at a Polaris dealer, he has been a mechanic on Polaris sleds for 11 years now. After reading the thread and buying a 2013 800 motor I had some concerns as I am sure you can tell by reading my threads.
Anyway my friends son said Polaris started having problems in 2009 with the 800 motors trying to meet EPA standards, he said they basically leaned it out to much. Since 2009 they have different pistons, heads, and have remapped the fuel. He said things improved every year and in 2013 they did not have any blown motor's come back to the dealer he works for. However I do not know how many sleds with 800 motors they sold.
I figured I would post this information hoping it will help someone. I agree all brands have their issue's, however we all have different personalities and opinion's which makes for great threads and disccusion

Polaris was putting out a bunch of reflashes for some time. A lot of that was due to mid range bogs and a mid range lean issue. They had to lean it out a bunch to meet EPA regs. Some of these sleds went down due to a mid range burn down but not that many compared to the ones that went down from the pistons slapping themselves out of whack and either scuffing or busting a skirt off the cylinder or piston itself. Polaris won't admit that there is a problem. And I'm not exactly sure what they did between 2008 and 2013 but I do know that the pistons are still the exact same. I've heard they thickened up the cylinder skirt to keep it from breaking off but that to me is just a band aid. Ski Doo has a thinner skirt than Polaris and they seem to be fine cause they have properly fit pistons. Some claim that its the short rod ratio, but Cat has a shorter rod than the Polaris and they're bullet proof. There is a really good thread on Snowest, I'll see if I can find it.

Mappings been good since 2011. I've kept up a lot on these in the past few years. My next sled will be a 2013 or newer SBA 800, I trust them enough (not 12 and older)...

the guy that i wrenched with in the ninties is still at the same polaris dealership. he said that hes had one blown 800 since 2012. hes probably one of the best and most honest mechanics you'd ever met. he's the reason i came back to poo in 13. it does truly suck when sleds go down. so hopefully polaris is finally getting them figured out.

I thank you too, have a new 2013 800 with 0 miles waiting for next winter. If this thread is still around in 2014 I will report back on how motor performed.

I didnt read through all the posts on here but enough of them. You guys that honestly think that Polaris doesnt have problems with these things wake up and smell the dam coffee. If you put 1,000 miles a year on you will be ok for 3 -4 years but then when your warranty is gone get ready to spend $3,000 or more to fix it. Im fortunate enough to put 4,000 - 6000 miles a year on and at least get them fixed under warranty , but Ive got cheated out of way too many trips.Sure there will be some people that get more than 3,000 on and dont blow up but the odds are against you after that.I honestly dont think Poo gives a rats but because most people end up fixing them when theyre out of warranty. You guys can do what you want but IM done spending money on junk. I gave Poo way too many chances already. OUT.....

My 2012 assault has been good so far(only 1000 miles) my question is can i still buy the remaining 2 years of the possible 4 year extended warranty ? My 2 year warranty goes till march 2014,if i could buy the 2 additional years for a fair price i would.Other wise i think im dumping it at the end of next year. Anyone no how much 2 years cost ?

Too much if you run that thing out west and ride it like it's meant to be ridden. Warranty doesn't cover heli rides out of a monster ravine. Spend the $1100 bucks on new monoblock and the Fix kit from MTNTK performance and be done with it. Ride it without the thought of "when is this thing going to go down on me?" and have that much more fun with a clear conscience. C'mon guys this is easy. Your going to spend the $1100 sooner or later, just get it out of the way. I was in the same boat as PolarisRider1 until half way through last year and my "GOOD ONE" of the poo 800's puke the mag side piston. I'm giving you this information for a reason, suck up your Polaris pride and fix that motor before its too late. If not, I have no sympathy for you. You got what you deserved for being stubborn.

You still got 5,000 out of your 800. Anything after 5,000 on a 2 stroke is borrowed time.

not for a average middle age trail rider 5k is nothing. plenty of 10k sleds out there just getting a first top end. 5k for a kid or boondocker/drag racer yep almost dead.

I think thats the point - 5,000 miles is a pretty low bar for a 5 figure machine. Maybe they need a long block program like doo
now that is a great idea doo has done very well with that deal.
dont know why it is so hard to get decent rebuilds for reasonable money for sleds like u can for a jet ski.
heck a Kawasaki 650 stand up is less than 600 for a long block with a 1 yr exchange Yamaha the same thing

I don't think people are saying Polaris never had a problem. My focus is on do they still have a problem with the 800 motor since I just bought one. From what I have read and heard they have improved it, doesn't mean something still can't happen.
I have had many Polaris sleds and put a lot of miles on most of them, they were the 340 TXL's to 600 switchback's and several in between. Highest was 9,000 miles, most averaged 5,000 miles when I sold them and they were running fine.
