The New Aluminum F 150's

My 04' F150 King Ranch and '09 Edge Limited both ate wheel bearings like they were candy. The F150 bearing issue was pretty normal (I was told) for higher mileage FWD but the Edge issue was a design flaw which Ford admitted but would not create a technical service bulletin or full blown recall for. I will buy a Ford any day over a GM though, quality company with good leadership.

My buddys 07 F-150 with the 5.JUNK over 1k lbs heavier than all the chevys ive owned he even went as far as removing the spare tire to weigh each of them on a scale. Ate through 2 sets of wheel bearings 3 sets of ball joints 2 sets of tie rods, bent rear axle shaft, fried a pcm, cam phasers, coil packs, 4 wheel drive didn't work, need I say more? He had the newest truck with the lowest miles and had 10x the problems. Bought it with 40k, sold it with 80k. Not to mention the 5.4's were the slowest pickup on the road and the exhaust sounds like a honda. Obviously the Ecoboost and 5.0 are now a lot quicker. As far as chevy wheel bearings go, I had a 98 Sierra sold with original wheel bearings at 175k, 99 Sierra classic replaced the originals at 160k, 05 silverado sold with originals at 128k, 97 silverado currently running the originals at 168k. My dads 02 F150 junk at 115k I replaced with quality made in usa hub assemblies and the truck is squeaking again at 130k....

Chevy and GM are now co-designing their next generation of transmissions - the 10 speed (like my old bike), which may be needed to meet Obama's EPA rules.

I wonder what all the brand warriors are going to do when they all share parts like NASCAR.

I have had 4 aluminum trucks over the past 15 years. They all corroded. Road salt and aluminum do not mix well in Illinois.

Its false to assume that because contractors and fleets buy a certain brand because its perceived its better quality.
Fleets buy on price 95% of the time. I drove fleet trucks for 30 yrs and all out trucks were purchased from the low bidder which were mostly Ford and Dodge, occasional GM truck were a special purpose vehicle was needed, Tahoe and Sububan's. I asked the head of the purchasing division once about why we always got Dodge and he said we can get 10 Dodge trucks for the price of 9 Fords & Chevys. When you buy 500 the money adds up. When it comes time to buy more vehicles, they put the spec's out on bids and buy the lowest bid be it Chevy, GMC, Dodge or Ford.

Landscape companies and snow plow companies are mostly locally one owner small businesses with less than 15 units and I don't consider them fleets. I agree fleets buy on price, but the companies I referred to are buying on quality IMO.

in your whole list of GM trucks I only see 1 Mexico rig in the bunch. I will give U GM was a great truck before 04 after JUNK and I can guarantee had at least 2 fr end jobs before u got it . I had a POS 05z71 and it was lucky to make a yr on a fr end seal and deff would not go over 15mo with out needing bearings dont get me started on oil consumption .04 to at least 09 chev is garbage sorry it just is .
I would take a 99gm 1500 over a 05 any day.
and why is a truck being 1000 lbs lighter a good thing? sounds like some stupid environmentalist thing . i get the new ones EPA and all but u are proud your GM is a light weight toy ? why stop there if u dont want a real truck and want a week frame get the Colorado

I will be buying the last red '14 FX4 on the lot in about Dec. There will be killer rebates on the 14's and I don't really care if I have the latest and greatest. Too many electronics on ALL of them.

I don't know if I would wait that long. Trucks maybe in short supply do to change over at the plants. That and lot people would rather have tried true than be guinea pig for new aluminum body.

I guess order banks opened yesterday for new trucks. Don't expect to see them til late December. I'll be be keeping my '12 for awhile, but be interesting to see if there's any real world mpg difference.

This is why you need a F-150 with ecoboost. My '11 get's between 24.5 and 26 mpg at 56 mph. Who cares about the body, it has by far the best gas engine made. Peak torque at 2,500 rpm, that means i am hitting peak torque driving around town. Other conventional engines need the higher revving rpms.

Now if I could just get an ecoboost in my switchback assault.

I would venture to guess that the majority of people aren't pulling an enclosed trailer full of snowmobiles at 75 mph frequently enough to negate the improved mileage the ecoboost delivers.

I get 15.5 mpg towing 4,500 lbs of boat and trailer at 75 mph.

It's splitting hairs anyway, I would rather have the 5.0 over the new and improved gm 5.3.

My cousin and I drove 550 miles each with a 144'' sled in the back of our crew cab short bed trucks, he was following me. his 2008 silverado with 5.3 mine with ecoboost. He got 14 mpg I got 19.5.

You guys must not like either very much if you can't even ride together for a snowmobile trip.

14 MPG's seems terrible for a truck on the highway with a limited load.

What MPG's do you get on you ecoboost when you drive it off the highway?

I have to say the 6.0 is still available in the f150 .
around town a acquaintance of mine is getting about the same as my 5.0 .but I don't know how he drives.
the 6.0 would be fun

In 05 only mexico trucks were crew cabs mine was ext cab made in Michigan. Tow capacity is the same between comparable Chevy's and fords but yet they weigh 1000 lbs different.

That's funny, no he was passing through and after the trip we were going completely separate ways. I actually like the guy a lot he even stood up in my wedding.

Yeah 14 mpg did seem low, but I remember it well. The roads were pretty bad, so there was no cruise control usage a lot of feathering the gas.

I have 12k miles on my truck since buying it used with 42k. It has the off road package with 3.73 rear end. 15.8 mpg all around, but at minimum 50% of the miles are in town stop and go driving. In these conditions it gets about 15 mpg. Towing as stated above is 15.5 mpg from 70 - 75 mph. 55-60 mph will get me about 25 mpg, and 75-80 mph gets about 21 mpg.

My dad with the same truck one year newer, 2012, got 22.5 mpg driving from Mercer, WI to Dane County WI last weekend. Some 55 some 75 mph.

When you start pulling heavy loads with the twin turbo, the mileage really drops.

So does that mean we can expect to see you trading in your Poo for a Doo? :)

I thought we were discussing trucks. Great contribution!! Why does it always have to go back to that? We aren't even to snow season yet. Geez.
