What if they made an old sled again?

Skiroule ---- how did you post that to this site??? I posted it to John on his FB page in hopes that he would post it. Thanks for doing it. That, in my mind, is one **** of a build. A beautiful example of what the thread is about.

GTL: I'm usually leery of following FB links but the sled stuff is pretty safe. In this case, I just followed the FB photo link to get to the photo. Then I could save the image to a file for posting here.

You're right about this sled. Judging from the sleds in the photo background, I'm thinking this is a first class build and a fully functioning sled. I'll bet it gets some real attention at the watering holes. How cool would it be to have one of these to ride.

I have seen that collection at the Milwaukee snow show. Dought that it will ever see snow. It is cool though!!

I have a 2011 Apex XTX and a new ZR 9000 RR/ Sidewinder copy and I prefer the Apex XTX. I can't get used to the ZR. Feels heavy, overheats in about 20 seconds. I let one of my friends ride my apex last trip, and even though i was on a brand new sled, i was getting jealous and wanted me apex back. Line them both up for a drag, race and really the stock apex and ZR were pretty evenly matched. The Turbo did win, but it was close.

My daily driver is a 1998 Indy 500, turned 10k last Friday. It runs awesome but after 160 miles i'm all beat up for the next two days. You guys can have all the nostalgia you want, if I could afford a new sled I'd be on one....

All of those sleds were and are more aerodynamic than anything we have now. They were warmer to ride. They went as fast or faster than what we have now. Most of them were just as light or lighter than what we have now. They turned a lot better on tight trails because the center of gravity was so much lower. And if you go back in the specs of these early 2000 sleds you will find that the rear travel of the suspensions was really not that much less than what we have now. Neither was the front on the ACs. Go back and look for yourself. The Pols and Yamis were still using trailing arms.
The only benefit of a rider forward sled is that it saves on one's back. Also it seems to work well in Snocross and severe ditch pounding. Nobody on this site does either of those things.
They don't turn. They are colder to ride. And they cost way too much for what they are. A person could put a piston in an Indy 700 in a parking lot underneath a streetlight. Nowadays you are screwed if a relay quits. But yeah you guys are right . Everything is great.

Nearly all of this is untrue. My 2016 has better wind protection than many older sleds (such as the SRX700). Rider forward sleds are great in rough trails, not just ditch banging or snocross (which is why the old sit-down sleds are out of production). They can still turn great, when set up well and ridden properly. And there are plenty of people on this site who ride hard and/or ditch bang.

Yeah, the lower sleds had better top speed. Who cares? Yeah, sleds are expensive and harder to work on. That's the price of technology.

You couldn't pay me to go back to that old junk, with piss-poor fuel economy and horrible riding position.

What if mfg's made an old style of sled but brand new? I am not talking about re-making a name in a new chassis, I mean re-creating a late 1990s Indy 500 likens. Sure there was downfalls of the sit down style sleds compared to rider forward, but engine size is plenty for most and I think there would be a lot of nostalgia which people would buy into. If we wanna make sleds great again, have to go back to that great time right?
I would rather go back to the days of Boa Skis , Wards , 12 horse Ski Doo , etc. , when there were no groomed trails , you blazed you're own , nobody cared about trespassing , nobody whining and crying about everything , just out having fun , 99% of the people on here probably did not experience those days.

x2 I am downright sick of working on carburetors... not just mine but all of the sleds that get hauled into my garage specifically with bad needle/seat valves. My 2 trail sleds are older sit down sleds, but after riding my dads 2014 indy sp 600 I don’t know why anyone in the right mind would own a sit down sled and the kicker is his sled isn’t even close to as nice of a sled as some of the latest and greatest tech out there. I haven’t ridden my RMK down enough trails to really notice how much of an improvement a rider forward sled is on a trail (I trailer as absolutely close as I can to my riding spots) The last rider forward trail sled I owned was an 07 IQ 600 and I guess I forgot what I was missing. Moral of the story change is good, new sleds are good, yes they may not be built to last like the old ones but good memories don’t make old sleds better than new ones LOL

My dad and mother were a part of that era. No such thing as groomed trails. People would go on a ride in a huge group and set up a base where everyone would bring out the food, make a huge bonfire and have a good time.

My dad was also a part of a race team at the South Range Snowmobile Club and my uncle was a Artic Cat dealer. They spent a lot of time tweaking Cats to make them win races.

Good times.

Yep I remember those days. The good old days when the sport was just starting out and we helped introduce the first trails in our county. The good old days when my brother and I (12 and 13 years old) would groom the trails near our home with our '68 Alpine and a 4' homemade drag. (We still have it and use it on our land.) The good old days when the local golf coarse allowed a trail across their land, until someone tore up their greens. The good old days when the local tree nursery allowed a trail across their land, until someone ran over their saplings. The good old days when my uncle allowed a trail across his land, until someone started pestering his livestock. The good old days when we were allowed to ride though town, until someone tore up everyone's yards. Etc...
Yep, whining and crying has ruined the sport. :hopelessness:
