yes or no

There is no doubt in my mind we will still go. I think this poll would be different if asked in Dec. when there is no snow anywhere but the U.P. and our sleds have been sitting there for 9 months. Now( this time of year) most people have gotten their itch scratched (not me I never get enough lol) and are ready for summer so they have a negative outlook on spending money. I know it sucks to always pay more and you can ride at home sometimes but there is still nothing like getting away for a few days and spending time with family and friends , and meeting new snowmobile friends. Have a great summer.

Why is there such a price difference between Wisconsin and Michigan. I think a 2 year for Wisconsin is $35 and Michigan is $45 for 1 year and if you live in Michigan you have to register it also. Where is all the money going in Michigan?

Ok, here goes my opinoin, and someone's not going to like it.

Michigan residence charge $25.00 Micheeganders will like this.
All out of state visitors charge $45.00 Opps I made someone mad
Canuck's charge $90.00 I just couldn't help myself

Doesn't it cost more for out of staters to get a hunting license?

I might as well go up to Canada if the price increases.

Hey, speeking of a contraversy, where's boondocker?(akafrnash)

I'm read'n and laying low on this. Nash is probably too busy trying to get that A/C cranking out the ice cubes.....to correct the grammer of some of these guys that were too busy pulling suzies pigtails than payn attention to the teacher.

While I think this "vote" has some relavance, there are far too many variables to be very meaningful.

Cost to GET to good snow
Lack of snow in your backyard
How's the job holding out....got money to burn
Ole lady whacking on your head about spending HOW MANY THOUSANDS
Where John's forecast for long term snow...has been....ah....stretched a bit....

Whether EZRA can get good weed at home...or travel to Michigan's newly forming industry

If the turbo will start wihout significant dealer "participation"....

The list is long.....and as any good science person knows, yah need to cut them variables to bring anything worth using out of it.

I will say that any time that costs increase, as a rule it is a bad thing. There is always going to be a number of people dropping out of the sport because it is too expensive....sucks too much time, or can't find riding buddies, or you have to stay home and wash your hair....(that's my favorite).

But one thing is sure....the YOUPEE won't fold up because some won't come....and even though accord'n to the latest census, 9% of the population has move out...(no doubt reading johns dull journels...caused most of that) they will endure up there and continue to swat those skeeters big as chickens in the summer, and belly to the bar in the winter.

Personally, I'm with Polaris on this....lack of guys headin north means just that many fewer yo-yo's to dodge on the way up there and trying to get back to watch their favorite re-runs of 2 and one half men to see what happens next....(dah....Sheen goes bonkers).....

But I will continue to watch this thread closely and if I go to sleep somebody kick my chair and I will wake up and read somemore......now leave me alone.....the sun is shining and I got to go wash my hair.

This year i bought trail permits for 3 sleds. Two of them saw groomed trails for about 20-30 miles the rest of my miles were all off trail, and the third sled broke fresh snow all season never even crossed a groomed trail.

Next year I will think long and hard about just not buying permits and ride entirely off trail and hope to not see law enforcement. Permitting 3 sleds at 135 bucks for sleds that won't see a groomed trail just means there is 135 bucks less to spend on gas, oil, burgers, and beers.....

I voted NO, I have purchased permits for my two sleds for the past 10 years, but now with younger kids we just aren't on the trails that much. Mostly private propery so it just isn't worth the cost. If I was going to the UP or going to be on the trails more I would purchase a permit.

look at the chart that I could not get larger. It is not wasted like most of the money the state has, It is spent very well.

Here is were it goes: http://msasnow.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=60&Itemid=63

Actually, if you were able to do a complete audit of both states budgets, you would most likely find that no more is being wasted in MI than in WI. MI's trail permit may be more expensive, but WI is just getting you in some other way. Maybe a higher tax on fuel, beer sales, food sales, I really do not know. But MI's permit fee is just more direct and all money that is collected goes directly into the trail system. In WI, it is likely all mixed up with other things so you really do not know exactly how much you are paying to ride there.

The chart does look like that it is not wasted. I would like to see if Wisconsin has some type of chart like that. If Wisconsin has that many more sled registered so they do not have to charge more. Just wondering if Michigan think the higher the price the more money they bring in while Wisconsin charges less and has more registered. I am going to snowmobile in Wi and Mi so I just like to see the cost difference.

It is in how the money is collected. Some years back money for the trails would come from other funds to help support the trails. Problem was the state always needed money for other things that they viewed more important than the trail system such as roads and bridges and mansions on Mackinaw Island, etc. The state kept pillaging our fund. MSA went to bat for the snowmobilers to get "Our" money designated to "Our" trails. The money is far better protected with the current legislation. But the job is not yet done. New Govenor and things can change. The $10 increase is to actually be used to purchase land and land right of ways to protect us from losing any more trails. You all have experienced "detours" on the trails because a landowner says, not this year fellas. routing out to the ditch for a couple miles to get around it type situations. Also to off set increases in fuel. The trails do not get nice for free. Michigan is very open on how the money is spent. You all need to join the MSA to help preserve what we have and to move forward. www.msasnow.org

And good thing, for if you recall, former Gov. Granholm tried to raid it a few years back.

Well-said, PR1.

Ding Ding Ding! I don't even ride in WI anymore... Honestly I need to look into just registering my sled in MI and be done with WI all together. I wonder if a non-resident can do that in MI? BTW, I voted YES, I'll still ride in MI.

You can register your sleds in Michigan even if you don't have a residence there. You still need to buy the same trail permit, though, whether a MI registered sled or not.

Lets see, $7000-$13000 for a new sled, $15000-$50000 for a truck to pull trailer, $2000-$10000 for a trailer to haul sleds, $3.65gal for gas to fill truck that gets 10mpg, and sled that gets 12mpg, $5-$10 bucks a quart for oil for sled. $500 in gear to ride. And your going to complain about 10 bucks more for a trail permit, makes alot of sense to me!!Lol

Micky Dee's

I spend more than $20.00 a month on McDonalds coffee. What's an extra twenty to ride the U.P.? Priceless in my world.

It's fine the way it is. Your one of the reasons that I'll always carry a spare. I have no issue charging you 6.50/gallon when yer out!! lol

Ya know Skylars good for $10 a gallon. Or trade him for whatever he has in his "Hot Dogger" and a few strudel. Just like money in the bank.
